Brigadier General, Group Captain Alexander Gabszewicz

RAF No. P-0163

* 06. 12. 1911
+ 10. 10. 1983

One of Poland's most successful fighter pilots and a respected commander was born on 6 December 1911 in the village of Szawla near Kaunas (now Lithuanian Kaunas). In 1931 he joined the army and graduated from the Podchorążych Piechoty School, from which he graduated in 1934. However, he then transferred to the Air Force and after undergoing pilot training was assigned to the 1st Aviation Regiment in Warsaw. In 1937, he qualified at the Higher Pilotage School and entered the fighting of World War II as a tactical officer of Fighter Squadron IV/1 of the 1st Aviation Regiment, which as part of the Fighter Brigade was tasked with protecting the skies over Warsaw. During his first combat flight in the morning hours of 1 September, he and Cpl. Andrzej Niewiara, he shot down a bomber He 111 from II.(K)/LG 1. He was not so successful on his next flight that day and had to be rescued from his damaged machine, injured and burned, by parachute.

After the end of the fighting he made his way to France via Romania, where he retrained on modern fighters and as a member of GC III/9, which was to protect Lyon and was armed with MS 406 fighters. Within their ranks, on 1 June he led a group of eight Polish pilots into combat with German He 111 bombers from II./KG 53. They shot down two enemies, one of whom was credited to Lt. Gabszewicz. In the evening of the same day, he was appointed commander of a double Polish swarm, assigned to GC III/10. Due to retraining on MB 152 aircraft, frequent changes of bases and general chaos, he was only minimally involved in the fighting until the Armistice and was evacuated from Bordeaux to the UK after the Armistice.

After further retraining, this time on the Hurricane fighter, he joined the ranks of 607. (from 11 October 1940) and later 303rd Squadron (from November 1940) in the Battle of Britain. However, his star only began to rise after his transfer to the nascent 316th Polish Fighter Squadron in February 1941. As the commander of B Squadron he achieved, together with P/O B. Anders the first victory of the unit, when on 1 April 1941, while patrolling over a convoy, they attacked three He 111 bombers from I./KG 27 and shot down the machine with the designation 1G+LH. At the head of the squadron, and later the entire squadron (from 14 November), he was involved in the air offensive just launched over the occupied continent until his retirement on 5. June 1942, he added 3 FW 190 kills to his record, and in cooperation he shot down a He 111 bomber (mentioned above) and a Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter, and probably shot down or damaged 4 other enemy machines, alone or in cooperation.

After a brief stint on the staff of 11th Fighter Group he was assigned to 58th Fighter Group in September 1942. OTU[/url] (Operational Training Unit) as an instructor.

He rejoined the fighting on 26 January 1943, when he took command of 2nd Polish Fighter Wing, where he again scored a kill on FW 190. 20. On June 20, he moved to the head of 1st Polish Fighter Wing (renamed 131st Wing from October 1943), where he achieved his last victories.

On 12 December he handed over command of the wing to W/Cdr Stanisław Skalski and retired. On February 4, 1944, he was briefly assigned, along with several other of his compatriots, to the 61st Fighter Squadron of the USAAF, armed with P-47 Thunderbolt fighters. As early as 20 February, however, he assumed command of Sector 18 2. TAF, to which 131. and 133. Polish fighter wings were subordinated, and once again became actively involved in the fighting over occupied Europe, including supporting the invading forces in Normandy. After the reorganization of the 2. TAF and the abolition of the sectors in July 1944, he took command of the 131st Wing, and at its head ended his wartime pilgrimage to the territory of defeated Germany in May 1945.

After the war, he still served as a liaison officer with 84th Group TAF and from 1946 commanded Coltishall Base, where all Polish fighter squadrons were gradually concentrated in the post-war period before their disbandment. After the disbandment of the Polish Air Force and demobilisation in 1947, he decided to remain in the UK. For several years he was chairman of the Polish Airmen's Association. In 1974 he was promoted to the rank of general. He died on 10 October 1983 at Hanley Stan in Worcester County. According to his last will, his ashes were scattered over the airfield at Dęblin and over Warsaw in 1992.

During World War II he flew 384 combat or operational sorties and his score closed at 9 and 1/2 enemy machines shot down for sure, 1 and 1/3 probably and 3 machines damaged, placing him at number 8 in the official statistics of the most successful fighter pilots of the Polish Air Force (the so-called Bajan List). He was awarded, among others: the Złoty Krzyż Virtuti Militari (No.00029, 13.3.44 - as the first Polish aviator), Srebrny Krzyż Virtuti Military (No.09425, 24.6.42), 4x Krzyż Walecznych, the Air Medal and in the post-war period the Commander's Cross with the Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta, British DSO & bar (as the only Polish aviator) and DFC, French Croix de Guerre and Dutch Order of Orange-Nassau .
