R-2 Mala

The R-2 "wet" minisubmarine for special forces was developed in the late 1960s by the former SFRY army based on the French PR-77 minisubmarine.
Its primary purpose is to transport combat swimmers to their destination, and it can also participate in defense against combat swimmers, rescue operations, seabed searches, etc.

The hull of the mini-submarine is made of aluminium alloy and the hatches are made of plexiglass. In the front part there is space for two combat swimmers, behind them there is a steering system, navigation and air unit.

The lead-acid battery is located in the middle of the fuselage. Its capacity is 122 Ah, which allows the mini-submarine a range of up to 23 nautical miles at a speed of 3.7 knots. Instead of the lead battery, silver-zinc batteries can be used, which guarantee a greater range.

Behind the battery is a transport compartment that can hold up to two 50 kg mines, plastic explosives and other diversionary devices.

At the rear is a 4.5 kW electric motor. The motor drives a single propeller, which makes minimal noise.

The mini-submarine is equipped with sonar, gyrocompass, depth gauge, searchlights and rescue breathing apparatus.

In addition to the former Yugoslav (now Montenegrin) navy, it is in the armament of Croatia, Sweden and, according to unverified reports, Libya. Currently, there is also an improved version of the R-2M, which, in addition to more power and less noise, is equipped with additional breathing apparatus.
