Tank Division 127 was formed on September 21, 1942 in the Middle Don region of southern Russia for the newly formed 27. tank division from III. section Tank Regiment 204 and consisted of a staff company, two companies of light tanks and one company of medium tanks. On October 10, he was reinforced by a fourth company, which he received from Schwetzingen from Tank Spare Squadron 100. As of October 24, the division was armed with a remarkable collection of 65 tanks of seven different types, including light Pz.Kpfw. II a Pz.Kpfw. 38 (t) and obsolete Pz.Kpfw. III with a short cannon caliber 5 cm. 5 incompetent tanks were under repair. Only ten tanks Pz.Kpfw. III ( Ausf. L and Ausf. M) and five Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. G was equal opponents of the Soviet T-34.
At the beginning of November 1942, the unit moved to the area north of Kastornoje under the jurisdiction 2. army and November 10 to the village Nikolskoye. At the end of November, the division moved to the 27th Panzer Division behind the lines occupied by the 8th Italian Army to the area north of Kantemirovka, where it was to complete preparation and combat training. On December 9 and 10, the division moved to the area around Boguchar - Belyi Kolodes - Pissarevka, where it was to support units of the 8th Italian Army and the 2nd Hungarian Army during the expected Soviet offensive.
On the morning of December 16, the Soviets launched Operation Little Saturn and broke through Italian lines the same day. Tank Division 127 did not operate as a whole during the defensive battles, its tanks were assigned according to current needs to individual combat groups. In mid-January, he had only 11 tanks and until the end of the Soviet winter offensive, its remaining members were deployed as infantry. After the dissolution of the 27th Panzer Division, the surviving men of Tank Division 127 were sent to Schwetzingen. Here the section was supplemented and in May included in the newly formed 24. tank division as III. section Tank Regiment 24.
