Commemorative medal of the town and fortress of Verdun is known, but no one realizes that it is a medal, which is very widespread, has many types and variants. Kindness and courtesy of mr. Dr. Roman Jedlicka on this issue show and the different types we describe.

This medal represents the most widely used unofficial French commemorative medal, which, beside of its popularity to this day keep a considerable seriousness. The French government was based mostly medal in memory of the field campaign, but not the battles or the outcome of these battles or wars. Therefore, the city of Verdun and its city council has created itself a visible memorial medal to honor the heroic deeds of all the soldiers, who protect their city from the cast of the German sections in the first three years 1. world war.

Verdunská city council, escaped temporarily to Paris, founded this medal 20. November 1916. It was intended as a reminder of all the brave officers and soldiers who fought between 31. July 1914 and ll. November 1918 in the sector of Verdun, between the Argonne and Saint-Mihiel, in the area that was under bombardment and heavy artillery fire. Soon after the end of the war was created by a committee that checked all the grant and that was since August 1922 written into the "Gold book". In that period (the year 1917) was commissioned by the visual performing entrusted With. E. Vernier. But because other artists feel comfortable to be able to create your own designs, probably intended for veterans as duplicates or refunds, sometimes just as undeserved awards, created a whole series of these Verdunských medals. These medals were worn on the same uniform ribbon of red paint that is on the edges of the French tricolor. Ribbons may vary its width and color shades. They are accompanied by placards with the inscription VERDUN, out of type no. l., which is granted without the label and on the type of no. 2, which has its own distinct label (see description).

l. the type of the Vernier (fig. no l)

The bronze medal has a diameter of 26.7 mm and a thickness of 1.7 mm with double-sided slightly raised edge.
Obverse bears a female bust in armor with a helmet and her hair loose on his shoulders symbolizing France, displayed heraldicky from the right, holding in right hand an officer's saber. The top is engraved a copy of: HE NOT PASSE PAS (in translation do not pass - a copy of the text of the order of general Petain). Name medailera Vernier at the edge of the right.

Reverse represents the "Porte Chaussée" - known verdunskou gate with two fortified towers. Above the fortress is in the sun's rays the inscription VERDUN, down a two-line inscription 21. FEVRIER 1916 (21.February 1916), the date of the battle and the after side of laurel branches. Right down to the theme of the fort is minutely mirrored signature of the author IN.

The upper edge of the medal is zaobleně raised with a hole, which passes through a small ring joining a bigger circle for the ribbon. The medal is awarded without a label. Are aware of 3 options:

Besides this "official" medal, as it was created by the city council, in 1920 produced even as a table medal with a diameter of 37 mm. The party is known verdunskou gate with towers bounded by oak leaves from the right and with a laurel from the left, above the gate is the inscription VERDUN. Mine is in the form of a shield emblem of the city of Verdun. The hinge is made identically as for the type of Vernier. This medal has it's own label on the ribbon with two-line inscription VERDUN/21.FEVRIER 1916. The second variant of this Augierova type was produced later, has a spherical hinge and clasp with the one-liners inscription VERDUN.

3. type Pruhomme (fig. 3)

Bronze medal with a diameter of 29.4 mm. On the obverse a female head in the helmet displayed heraldicky from the left, with a laurel branch around it for a helmet, while one part of the laurel covers the helmet. On the desktop is pětiřádkový inscription AUX/GLORIEUX/DEFFENSEURS/DE/VERDUN(the Glorious defenders of Verdun). The hinge is formed by a handle. Are known a total of 3 additional variants:

6. type anonymous (embossing "Rene") (fig. 6)

Bronze medal with a diameter of 29.1 mm, reminiscent of the face-type 3 (Pruhomme). Here is the left displayed a woman's head in the helmet as a symbol of France in a French uniform, which shows the insignia on the collar of the shell on the left. On the right side of the collar is the year of 1916, then at the bottom the laurel branch. Around a copy of VERDUN-ONE NOT PASSE PAS.

Rub represents the burning torch placed in front of the French flag, surrounded with a laurel branch on the right and oak on the left. Through the torch is placed a fancy label. Labels

The official Verdunská medals (I.type Vernier) has no label and in type no 2 Augier was the label already described. Are aware of 4 other types of labels, which are bronze or silver-plated. All bear the inscription VERDUN and differ only in size and types of letters. Three of these labels have a smooth surface, the fourth as a single is the inscription VERDUN on zrnitém basis.

But there are also two other French medals, which have a relationship to the battle of Verdun, but also can not be clearly classified between the above-mentioned "right" Verdunské medal. It's a medal type RASUMNY and type of STEINER. These popular medals were sold to the public for the purpose of financial gain for verdunské veterans or veteran's organization. Originally they were worn in the color of the French tricolor, only later replaced with the classic ribbon dedicated to Verdunskou medal collectors in France are sorted into a series of verdunských medals. The images of both these types is used from the internet and are used here like the accompanying image material.

7. type Rasumny (fig. 7)

Circular bronze medal with typical handle. On the obverse is the bust of a bearded French soldier with a rifle in hand, around a copy of the SOUVENIR DE VERDUN, down the year 1914-1918. The dimensions of the medals are not listed.

8. the type of Steiner (fig. 8)

Bronze medal with a diameter of 29 mm with a ring-shaped curtain (the image used from the website - unfortunately there is only a drawing of the obverse sides). The obverse side represents a standing female figure as a symbol of France, which is on the head frygickou cap with laurels and holding a sword. In the background is on the right part of the fortress of Vaux, on the left part of the city of Verdun, over which the sun rises. The top is placed a copy of the HE NOT PASSE the WAIST, down change the name of the medailera STEINER. Rub constitutes part of a stylized fortress under the castle city crown. Below is the cross of the legion of Honor on the ruins, on both sides of the fortress is divided inscription VER/DUN.

Verdunské medal are among an unofficial French medals cannot be worn on the uniform (According to the law of 6. November 1920). Fascination for a long and hard fight, and efforts to keep Verdun from falling into German hands, created from the Verdunské medal undying symbol of relentless defense and one of the coveted objects faleristických collections, oriented on the French decoration or decoration of the period 1. world war.
