Presidential Guard - Proedriki Froura

The Presidential Guard of the Greek Land Army is a ceremonial unit nicknamed or called Evzones. This name was borne by historical military units of the first independent Greece in the 19th century.

With the first Greek king, Prince Otto of Bavaria, came the military units of the European powers in 1833. These units included 10 battalions of Greeks recruited in Europe. These battalions were called Skirmisher or Evzone. One company was set aside from them to protect the new king.
In 1836, some of these battalions were renamed Mountain Battalions. These units were used to protect the Greek-Turkish border, fighting Ottoman rebels and bandits. In 1854 the Mountain Battalions were renamed Skirmisher.
In December 1867, several battalions of light infantry Evzones were officially formed. A year later, on 12 December 1868, two infantry, one and one cavalry companies were additionally formed from these battalions, serving directly to protect the Royal Palace and the King. Thus the Royal Guard was formed, named Agema and later renamed Palace Guard.

The Evzones battalions were merged into one division in 1897 during the Greek-Ottoman War. The Evzones battalions went on to fight in the so-called Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, World War I, the subsequent Greco-Ottoman War in Asia Minor 1919-1922, and the Italian invasion of Greece in 1940. After the German invasion of 1941, when the Evzones battalions were almost massacred, they were disbanded. They were probably reinstated after the war, but after the Civil War in 1950 they were completely abolished or disbanded, leaving only the Royal Guard. The latter was renamed the Presidential Guard in 1973, when the monarchy was finally abolished, Proedriki Froura, numbering about 120 men.

Members of this Presidential Guard must, among other requirements, be at least 186 cm tall.

Their Fustanella suit is based on the traditional Greek suit used in the struggle for Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire. It includes a wool kilt (men's skirt), woolen white (cream) stockings and a cotton loose blouse. The head is adorned with a red fez with black long fringe and the feet with red leather slippers with black pompoms.
Today they have several types of ceremonial uniforms.
The oldest uniform Model 1914 "Doulamas" - Blue dates from 1910, when it was designed. Today it is called winter and is used from October to March.
Summer - Beige, Model 1995 is used in the other spring and summer months of the year.
Ceremonial - The Ceremonial uniform is also light-colored and its base is 400 years old. It is used on Sundays, national holidays and official state business.
A black leather belt with two ammunition pouches and a bayonet holster complete the outfit.
They are armed with an M1 Garand self-loading rifle with a mounted bayonet, the officers with a sabre.
Otherwise they are trained and armed as light infantry in case of an emergency and dressed in standard Greek uniform.
Their duties include standing guard outside the presidential palace and outside the Greek parliament at the tomb of the unknown soldier. Where they take turns at all hours. Attending parades and ceremonies and raising and lowering the national flag on the Acropolis every morning and evening. Above all, however, they are assigned to protect the President of the Hellenic Republic.
