The first mentions of the development of a super-heavy tank weighing 100 tons appeared at Hitler's conference on March 5-6, 1942. The Krupp company was in charge of the development, following the cancellation of the 72 tonne Löwe project.
to create a new project as quickly as possible, and plans called for the first operational tanks in the spring of 1943.
On March 21-22, 1942, Porsche was also awarded the contract for the independent development of the 100-ton tank.
The specifications for the development of the turret for this tank were discussed at a working meeting at the Krupp company on 18.4.1942. The turret was to be fitted with a 15 cm gun with a barrel length of 40 rounds (L/40), the ammunition was to be split, and the expected rate of fire was estimated at 4-5 shots per minute. The projectile weight was reduced from 43 to 34 kilograms, with such a projectile an estimated muzzle velocity of 845 m/s was assumed. Such a turret was offered to Porsche and its project VK 100.01. At the same time, a proposal was made for a 12.8 cm gun with a barrel length of L/50, where a muzzle velocity of 810 m/s was to be achieved with a projectile weighing 29.3 kg. At a meeting between Albert Speer and Hitler, a request was made to increase the armour protection, which would have meant an increase in the weight of the tank to 120 tons. Hitler also demanded a gun with a barrel length of L/60 or even L/72. His demands stemmed from concerns about the planned new Soviet heavy tanks. Hitler constantly suggested some modifications to the project, e.g. he demanded that the floor armour be up to 100 mm thick, offered alternative armament for the tank, which could consist of a 15 cm L/37 gun or a 10.5 cm L/70 gun. He himself preferred a 10.5 cm gun with a higher firing cadence. Since a tank of such a weight category was of small strength, it should have had fire support from smaller tank types when deployed. Hitler's priorities on the project were first and foremost strong armament, secondly speed and thirdly strong armour. According to the plans, the prototype machine was to be delivered by Porsche on 12 May 1943.
The company Krupp received the contract SS 006-4467/42 for the development of a turret for the Pz.Kpfw. "Mäuschen" on 17.7.1942. The specifications were as follows:

Armour thickness:
front - 250 mm
sides and rear face - 200 mm
ceiling - 80 mm

Gun armament was to consist of 15 cm Kw.K. L/31 with a maximum range of 16 km. The weight of the charge was to be 43.5 kg, with which, at a muzzle velocity of 750 m/s, it could penetrate 190 mm thick armour at an angle of 30°° at 1000 metres. The secondary gun armament was to be a 7.5 cm Kw.K. L/24 with a maximum range of 7 km. The ammunition supply was to be 25 rounds for the 15 cm gun and 50 rounds for the 7.5 cm gun. The aiming was to be manually operated, the aiming was to be electrically operated with the possibility of manual control. The total weight of the turret was to be 57 tons.

Porsche presented the first design of the tank in a drawing Sk.7949 dated 5 October 1942. The type designation of the tank was Type 205 A. The documentation was drawn up in a form with both a 15 cm L/37 and a 12.8 cm gun. The turret, with its lapped 12.8 cm and 7.5 cm guns, was to contain a standby ammunition supply of 22 (12.8 cm) and 45 (7.5 cm) rounds. A further 20 and 50 rounds were to be stored in the hull. The additional armament was to be a MG 34 machine gun lafeted in the Kugelblende in the front armour of the hull. A Daimler-Benz water-cooled 12-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 44.5 litres and a power output of 1,000 HP (745.7 kW) was to be driven by an electric current generator, which was to supply the two traction electric motors. These were to propel the tank to a top speed of 20 km/h. The total weight of the tank was to be around 150 tonnes.

The second model was drawn on the drawing Sk.7948 also dated to 5.10.1942. The type designation of the tank was Type 205 B. The Type 205 B differed from the Type 205 A only in the engine used, which was an air-cooled diesel Porsche Type 205/2 engine of 41.5 litres displacement and with a power output of 780 HP (581.6 kW).

Porsche Porscheproposed to reduce the thickness of the hull armouring by 10%, as well as Krupp's proposal to reduce the overall weight of the turret from 47 to 43 tons.
Porsche's late 1942 proposal thus put forward the concept of a tank with a turret located in the rear of the hull. The power for the electric generator was to be provided by a Daimler-Benz 603 water-cooled aero engine with an output of about 1500 HP (1118.6 kW). The engine was located in the hull in front of the tower and drove a generator located behind it, the electricity produced from which drove a pair of electric motors which in turn turned the drive wheels. The tank was to have eight running wheels suspended by axial torsion bars. The armour plating of the hull was to be 200 mm thick at the front, 180 mm thick at the upper sides, 100 mm thick at the lower sides, 180 mm thick at the rear, 100 mm thick at the front of the floor and 50 mm thick at the rear of the floor. The plans also envisaged the development of super-heavy self-propelled guns based on this platform. The Krupp turret design was to be used for Krupp's Tiger-Maus (later E-100) project in addition to the Porsche Maus.
On 21.12.1942 the final values of the thickness of the armoured parts of the hull were determined as follows:

front - 200 mm
inner sides - 80 mm
outer sides - 100 mm
stern - 150 mm
front ceiling - 100 mm
rear ceiling - 50 mm
Front floor - 100 mm
rear floor - 50 mm

On 23.12.1942 a meeting was held between Krupp and WaPrüf representatives to discuss the modifications to the design details. The planned turret collar, a kugelblende with a defensive machine gun, was cancelled, the difficult to implement plan to create a tunnel to allow some of the crew to pass from the driver's seat to the turret compartment was cancelled, and the numbers of rounds of 75 mm calibre ammunition carried were changed (100 rounds in the hull and 25-30 rounds in the turret).

On January 3-5, 1943, at a working meeting between Albert Speer and Adolf Hitler, the production of Mäuschen was discussed, among other things. Hitler approved Porsche's final design, the armament consisting of a 12.8 cm gun, and the production plan. The hull and turret were to be made by [url=/topic/view/117380]Krupp, assembly was to take place at Alkett. The plan called for the production of ten tanks per month. Series production was to start before the end of 1943.

However, design changes continued on.
On January 21, 1943, a 1:1 scale wooden mock-up of the tank was presented to the Panzer-Kommission(representatives of military research institutes and company representatives).
On 2.4.1943 an increase of 10 tons in the total weight of the tank compared to the original calculation of 1/1943 was reported. The increase was due to the increased final weight of the turret and hull, increased ammunition stores and the incorporation of a new weapon system into the design, namely the flamethrower.
On 13-15 May 1943, a conference was held between Hitler and Speer, where a proposal was made to increase the stock of 12.8 cm ammunition from 50 to 80 rounds, and at the same time to reduce the number of 7.5 cm rounds from the original number of 200 rounds to 100 rounds.
On 10 June 1943, Alkett was informed that the six planned prototypes were to be stripped of their crew protection system against poisonous battle gases.

The problem proved to be the production of the hull as designed. The extremely thick armour plates and the shape of the side plates, where their difficult and uneconomical modification (milling) was necessary, were criticized by the manufacturer Krupp. Also, the overall width was problematic when transporting the tanks by rail. Therefore, the hull design was to undergo modification and later prototypes and production machines were to have differently constructed lots. Due to the high weight of the tank and the complex construction, the need for modification of the chassis part arose. Initially it was planned to use chassis components using torsion suspension from Tiger tanks, but these were not designed for such loads. Another reason for the changes, or simplification of production, stemmed from the fact that only Krupp had the technology, or production facilities, for both the complex milling and subsequent drilling of the holes in the hull, or the space between the hull side wall and the outer armour plate, in the whole of Germany. If their factories were bombed, production of such a complex tank would essentially be halted. The chassis in the now commonly known form was designed by Porsche, their production was handled by Skoda Werke (Škoda Plzen).
An interesting feature is the design of the flamethrower for the Maus tank. In 1/1943 the company Köbe was approached in connection with the development of this device, which also dealt with the Flammpanzerwerfer III. The requirement was for a flamethrower with a range of 150-200 metres. Köbe responded to this request by saying that it was difficult to implement. Nevertheless, a design for a flamethrower was made, the two ejection tubes of which were to be mounted on brackets attached to the rear armour of the hull, one on each side. This device was outlined on a 1:1 scale model of a Maus tank built and presented to Hitler and his suite on 14 May 1943. The whole system was to have a weight of 4.9 tons, the fuel supply was to be 1,000 litres. Subsequently after the presentation, the plan to use a flamethrower was rejected.
As far as armament was concerned, the weapon chosen was 12.8 cm Kw.K. 44 L/55, but the turret was to be constructed so that a 15 cm L/38 gun could also be lafeted. The additional gun was to be a 7.5 cm Kw.K. The length of its barrel was considered. L/31, L/32 or L/33 were considered, until finally the L/36 option was chosen. The Krupp company received an order for the production of these components on 13 February 1943:

3 complete 12.8 cm and 7.5 cm guns
2 barrels with breech for the 12.8 cm gun
5 barrels for the 12.8 cm gun
2 barrels with breech and muzzle brake for the 15 cm gun
3 barrels for 15 cm cannon
2 shooting stands for shooting tests for the Hillersleben firing range

Consideration was also given to developing a 12.8 cm Kw.K. L/70, which was to replace the original L/55 barrel length cannon. According to the plans, undivided ammunition was to be used for the 12.8 cm Kw.K. 44 L/55 intended for the Maus tank. Split ammunition was to be used later in production.

Originally, the commander was to have a swivel turret with observation periscopes. This was included in the initial designs, and the mock-up tank had it, but was later discarded due to unsuitable construction.
The periscope sight for firing the gun was a Carl Zeiss product (T.W.Z.F.1) and the T.Rbl.F.3 swivel periscope sight (one was available to the commander, the other to the loader) was located on the ceiling. They were protected by armoured covers. There was also a Nahverteidigungswaffe (defensive port from which anti-personnel grenades, smoke grenades and flares could be fired) in the turret ceiling. Two ventilation fans were also mounted on the tower ceiling, and MP Kugelblende (ejection ports for defensive firing of MP 38/MP 40 submachine guns) were located on the sides of the tower, in the rear armour of the turret there was an opening for loading ammunition (munitionsluke), in which was integrated another firing hole for machine gun fire).
Only the installation of a stereoscopic rangefinder and an anti-aircraft gun MG 151/20 remained in the project. A design for a deep-wading kit was also worked out.

At a discussion between Army and industry representatives, delivery of the first five Maus was scheduled for 5/1943. This date was unrealistic, a contract was later signed specifying that the first model tank must be completed by 9/1943. Four more machines were to follow, to be completed by the end of 1943. Mass production was to follow, with production ramping up to ten tanks per month from 3/1944. In total, a production run of 120 Maus tanks was planned. The hulls and turrets were to be manufactured by Krupp, the assembly was to be done by Alkett, Berlin-Spandau. The production of the 12.8 cm guns was to be handled by Krupp. However, preparations for production were thwarted by the Allied bombing of Krupp's factories on 5-6 March 1943, when, in addition to the Maus mock-up, documentation for the turret and armament was burned, not to mention damage to the production facilities. Production plans were thus pushed back and the preliminary estimate for completion of the first turret was for 11/1943, with the zero series machines to be completed in 12/1943 (3 units) and 1/1944 (3 units). The first serial tanks were to be delivered in 1/1944 (2 pcs), 2/1944 (5 pcs), 3/1944 (5 pcs), 4/1944 (7 pcs) and from 5/1944 monthly production was to increase to 10 tanks. On 5/5/1943 the total order was increased to 135 tanks. With the pre-production six tanks, the total production was to be 141 tanks. The hulls and turrets of the six pre-series tanks ordered (order SS4911-0006-6387/42) were to carry production numbers Nr.351451 - 351456, and the 135 serial tanks were to carry production numbers Nr.351457 - 351591. The aforementioned bombing of Krupp's factories in Essen actually destroyed the entire production programme. The preliminary estimate for repairing the damage and restarting production was estimated at 7-8 months. Due to the acute needs of the German troops, the capacity of the manufacturers was concentrated on other tasks. The cancellation of the contract for serial production came on 5.11.1943. This was followed by the cancellation of contracts for the production of pre-series hulls and turrets. Only two hulls and one turret were to be built; only one complete prototype was to be built.

The first hull (Wanne Nr.1) was Krupp welded on 7.7.1943. It was then sent for completion to Alkett, who completed the first chassis on 22.12.1943. The platform was wagoned and shipped to Böblingen on 10.1.1944.
In 1/1944 work on the second platform also started, but the priority was Alkettwork on other armoured vehicles (StuG) and work on the second platform was completely halted for two weeks. The unfinished second platform was shipped to Böblingen on 7 March 1944, where it was to be completed. The unfinished turret also ended up in Böblingen on 3.5.1944, where it was to be finished by technicians sent from Krupp. It was mounted on the second platform in 6/1944. Split ammunition (burst and anti-armour) was also sent for firing tests.

The first prototype platform arrived in Böblingen on 14/1/1944, where it was subsequently unmounted and moved under its own power to the 5 km distant garage of Panzer-Ersatz-Abteilung 7 in Hindenburgkaserne Böblingen. The following day it underwent its first runs in the field. The weight of the turret was simulated by a mounted weight. During the tests there were problems with the running wheels, which became damaged. Gradually the platform was being completed, the missing equipment was being replenished. During tests on 15.3.1944-17.3.1944, the first prototype became bogged down in muddy soil during tests in unsuitable terrain. It was laboriously extricated and the original running wheels were subsequently replaced with modified wheels on 20.3.1944. Subsequently, the components of the tank were dismantled to be inspected. Meanwhile, on 10.3.1944, a second prototype arrived in Böblingen, again without turret and other components. The second prototype had modified running wheels with relief holes drilled. On 3.5.1944 an incomplete prototype of the turret arrived. The turret was mounted on the V2 prototype on the night of 7-8 May 1944 due to an expected inspection visit by Generaloberst Guderian. Constantly, the prototypes were retrofitted with components supplied by individual manufacturers. Sporadic test runs were conducted to uncover technical problems of the project. Fuel consumption was found to be 350 litres of petrol per 10 km (at least 77 octane in the case of the MB 507 engine). Replacing the tracks on the tank was very complex and challenging due to the structural design of the side armour supporting the chassis components and protecting the tracks themselves. It took six men eight (!) hours in the workshop area. On 19 August 1944, Krupp was notified by the Waffenamt that further work on the prototypes had stopped and the assemblers were withdrawn to the parent company to perform more acute tasks. The prototypes were sent for further tests to Kummersdorf, where they remained until the end of the war. In the tense military situation before the end of the war, several battle groups were formed from the test tanks located on the Kummersdorf polygon, but the Maus prototypes did not feature in them. The V1 prototype was found directly on the polygon, the V2 prototype was found destroyed by a German crew near the Kummersdorf railway station. After the fighting ended, the Soviets mounted only a slightly damaged turret on the platform of the first prototype and shipped it to the Soviet Union for testing. This prototype is now part of the collection at the Russian Tank Museum in Kubinka.

However, the destruction of the production facilities after the Allied bombing and the subsequent cancellation of the Maus serial production order was not the end of the programme. On 13 March 1944, Krupp reported the possible resumption of production and work on the [iaa]Maus project. On 23.3.1944, the representative of WaPrüf 6 was informed by Gen.Insp.d.Pz.Tr. that Hitler had ordered the acceleration of the tests of the delivered prototypes and the resumption of work on the Maus tank. Subsequently, Porsche ordered Krupp to deliver a second prototype turret for the Maus I and a first prototype turret for the Maus II. However, the contracts were not renewed after an exploration of production possibilities. The official end of the project dates back to 27 July 1944, when the scrapping of the in-progress hulls was ordered. After the end of the war, two turret welds (Turm Nr.351452 and ?) and, according to sources, one hull (Wanne Nr.351453) were found at the Krupp factory in Essen (the factory photo, however, shows a pair of hulls). On the test polygon at Meppen three hull welds (Wanne Nos.351454 - 351456, the factory markings of two of them were 192W4 (4th hull) and 161W6 (6th hull)) and three turret welds were found.

Due to the discontinuation of the Maus programme, the self-propelled gun/tank launcher projects 15 cm/17 cm Sturmgeschütz auf Mausfahrzeug were also discontinued.

Takže... s pomocou informací z AFV interiors a Achtung panzer a little kombinácie-dedukcie-konštrukcie: Maus V1 bol na konci vojny bez veže, len so simulovanou záťažou.
Essen padol do rúk západných spojencov. Bolo zhotovených niekoľko podvozkových pojazdových skupín, skeletov veží a minimálne jeden kompletný skelet kobry viď. fotá z Essenu.

Citace :
