Walther von Hünersdorff was born on 28. November 1898 in the egyptian Cairo. In August 1915 he entered as an aspirant officer in the prussian army, specifically to 1. slezskému husarskému regiment no. 4. Here was in October 1916 promoted to lieutenant and served as ordonančního officer. After the war he was taken to the Reichswehru and served at 7. (prussian) cavalry regiment. In 1922 he was transferred to 11. (prussian) cavalry regiment, where he was in 1925 promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander. He joined the plukovnímu staff and after a time he began to perform the function of the hand.

In August 1930, he joined in Berlin on the staff of the 3. division auxiliary leadership training, which was the cover designation for the education for the officers of the general staff that Germany prohibit the provisions of the treaty of Versailles. In February 1933 he was promoted to the rank of rytmistra and in April of the following year transferred to the staff Headquarters of the panzer units where he was in April 1936 promoted to major. In October 1936 he was appointed a company commander in the Reconnaissance section (motorized) 4. In February 1938 he became operations officer on the staff of 1. panzer division in Weimar. Here he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. From April to August 1939, he served on the staff of the the Group headquarters of the ground troops 6.

At the end of August 1939 he joined as operations officer to the staff of the 253. infantry division, with which during the Polish campaign covering the western border in the area of Erkelenzu in the eifel hill country. At the end of October career advanced, he became operations officer II. army corps, with which he took part in the campaign against France. In August 1940 he was appointed chief of staff XV. army corps (motorized). When the glee club was in November renamed to Panzer group 3, von Hünersdorff was appointed its chief of staff and had her operation Barbarossa, at whose beginning was promoted to the rank of colonel. When she was in January 1942, the group was renamed on 3. tank army, remained her chief of staff. In the same month received the German cross in gold.

In July 1942 he was appointed commander of the Panzer regiment 11, with whom he participated in the attack, which was to release German units surrounded at Stalingrad. The event was not successful, however, von Hünersdorff received for the exhibited performance of the Knight's cross. In February 1943 he was given command of the 6. panzer division and in may of the same year became its commander, and was appointed to the rank of major general. With divisions attended the the third battle of Kharkov, including the battle of Sokolovo, battle of Kursk. 13. July was the first morning slightly injured shot and in the evening suffered a hit to the head. The following day, received in a military hospital in Kharkiv, the oak leaves to the knight's cross. Three days afterwards, however, his injuries succumbed. In memoriam was in August promoted to the rank of lieutenant general. Buried was at the kharkiv military cemetery.
