Leo Dietrich Franz Reichsfreiherr Geyr von Schweppenburg came from an old westphalian noble family. He was born 2. march 1886 in Potsdam, where he served his father as an officer in a hussar regiment. 29. June 1904 entered into 2. Württemberského dragounského regiment in Stuttgart. After reassignment to the War school in Potsdam was 19. October 1905-promoted to first officer rank. After graduating from the War academy in Berlin in the years 1911-1914 he returned with the rank of lieutenant to his regiment, and with him had a field campaign in Poland, France, Russia and the Balkans. In 1915 he was promoted to captain and by the end of the war he held the higher staff functions in 9. equestrian division, 101. infantry division and XXII. the backup choir.
Geyr remained after the conclusion of peace in the army and was admitted to the Reichswehru. He served as instructor at the infantry school in Munich, as a staff officer at the 4. division and in the years 1931-1933, he commanded 14. cavalry regiment. 1. April transferred to London, where he held the position of military attaché to Great Britain, Belgium and Holland. 1. September 1935, he was promoted to first general's rank. During the crisis in the Rhineland in 1936 Geyr in their reports to Berlin, warned against underestimating the British and pointed out the danger of Hitler's political adventurism. That earned him a rebuke from secretary of war Werner von Blomberga.
1. October 1937 was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and ordered back to Germany. Here take command of 3. panzer division. For performances during the Polish campaign earned him personal praise from the Hitler and 20. April 1940 promotion to general of cavalry. 14. From January 1944 then as commanding general of the Panzer group West responsibility for the training and formation of all armoured units in the west, a total of 10 tank divisions and divisions of the panzer grenadiers. In the case of an allied landing from the Panzer group West was expected that a massive counter-attack to stop the invading forces. Field marshal Erwin Rommel, commander army Group B, that Panzer group West subject, I Geyrovy panzer divisions to move as close as possible to the coast, to the Allies prevented to gain a foothold on the beaches. Thanks to the previous experience of fighting in north Africa feared that the superiority of the Allies to stymie any movement of the strategic reserve. On the contrary Gerd von Rundstedt, supreme commander of the German forces in the west, shared Geyrovo the belief that the tank unit it is necessary to keep in the background and in the manévrovém the fight after landing to encircle and destroy the allied forces. Therefore, the tank structure will remain hidden from allied aircraft in the forests of the northwest and south of Paris, from where they can attack the enemy penetrating into the interior. Competency disputes ultimately had to deal with Hitler, which control over parts of the tank jednotkek split between Rommel and Rundstedta and the remaining division in the north dedicated as a backup to the high command of the Wehrmacht. In the days immediately after the date "D" it turns out that this solution is opened to the Allies the way to France.
The allied invasion in Normandy was launched on 6. June 1944. It, that there was no deployment of the panzer advances immediately after landing, was for the Germans, disastrous consequences. Only 8. June had Geyr available in three tank division, which was ready to plunge to the north to defend the Caen against british and canadian forces advancing on that city from their bridgehead and in the counterattack drive them back into the sea. 10. June 1944 the bombers of the Royal Air Force attacked his newly established headquarters at La Caine. All staff officers were wounded or killed, destroyed were all the radio cars and most other vehicles. Injured Geyr with the remnants of his command withdrew to Paris. Command tank units took over until Geyr again set up its headquarters, SS-Oberstgruppenführer Josef Dietrich your crew . tank corps of the SS. Dietrich Geyrův offensive plan after the bombing of Caen 11. June and the canadian false flag operation intended to attack put down.
Geyrovy enhanced tank units to hold the allied advance for three more weeks. At the end of June said in a message to OKW, approved and submitted to the von Rundstedtem, the requirement to vacate Caen and the practice of "elastic defence". He further stated, that tank divisions are being decimated by the result of the policy, which the OKW advocates. 2. July was on Hitler's order relieved of command and replaced by general of tank troops Heinrich Eberbachem.
