LOV 50 B

A light armored vehicle capable of conducting combat operations against live fire and weakly protected targets with effective fire at rest and on the move. The vehicle consists of a IVECO M65E19WM LMV chassis and a Norwegian weapon station M151A2 Protector. The vehicle's purpose-built equipment consists of a Czech VICM 200 internal voice unit with a VICM 120 wireless module, which allows crew members to communicate even at a certain distance outside the vehicle. The commander's workstation is equipped with a tablet with its own GPS module and data interface for interfacing with radio stations. The tablet allows access to the BVIS combat vehicle information system. LOV 50 B is equipped with two US Harris RF-300M-TV FALCON III radios and a WBS 2500 vehicle-borne jammer (only on 32 vehicles delivered in 2010 and 2011) against radio-launched improvised explosive devices. There is a DAGR (AN/PSN-13) encrypted military GPS receiver and a Li-On battery that significantly extends the operation of the weapon station when the vehicle engine is off. The capacity of this battery with the standard vehicle battery allows the vehicle to perform part of the combat mission (for a minimum of two hours) in observation mode with the weapon station cameras and while the radio station is operating.

The LOV 50 B vehicle was procured under the 107 050 programme - Acquisition of Light Armoured Vehicles, for which an amount of 4,298 billion CZK (including VAT) is earmarked covering the purchase (and other services) of a total of 120 Italian LMV vehicles in three variants between 2009 and 2015. The delivery of 90 vehicles took place between 2010 and 2013, while another 30 units may be delivered between 2013 and 2015. The contract for the delivery of the LMV including logistics support between the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic and Praga-Export was signed on 18 December 2009. The subject of the contract is the delivery of 90 light armoured vehicles IVECO M65E19WM LMV in three modifications:

- LOV 50 B (light armoured fighting vehicle, turret M151A2 Protector) - 72 units
- LOV 50 BVR (light armoured combat vehicle, command turret M151A2 Protector) - 7 units
- LOV 7,62 B (light armoured combat support vehicle, turret ZSRD 07) - 11 pieces

2013

CZK 912,824,000

(prices exclude additional installation of RF-300M-TV radio stations and DAGR GPS receiver)

The contract for 90 LMV, the total amount of which was CZK 3 620 406 534 including VAT, also included the acquisition of logistical support in the form of the purchase of ammunition, spare parts, workshop equipment and courses (training of gunner-instructors and workshop specialist-instructors).

The project also included an Agreement on the implementation of an industrial cooperation programme, the value of which amounted to 100 % of the total purchase price excluding VAT under the contract. The value of the direct offsets was to represent at least 20% of the value of the industrial cooperation programme. It was scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019.

The Military Repair Plant VOP 026 in Nový Jičín (now VOP CZ) carried out the integration of the M151A2 Protector weapon station and additional accessories according to the requirements of the Czech Armed Forces. The modifications carried out in VOP 026 or VOP CZ included preparation for the installation of navigation and communication aids, jamming equipment, installation of a central power box, weapon mounts, permanent internal and external modifications for the storage of mandatory and additional equipment, mounting of night vision devices and integration of the vehicle commander's laptop. The installation of RF-300M-TV radios and DAGR GPS receivers was subsequently carried out by MEDTEC-VOP at a cost of CZK 28 195 986.

LOV 50 B is not much different from the first ever two LMVs armed with M151A2 weapon stations, which were procured by Military Police Special Operations Unit - unfortunately. The M151A2 theoretically allows for the lafetation of a 12.7 mm caliber machine gun (M2HB-QCB), a 7.62 mm caliber machine gun (FN MAG), or M240; or MINIMI, respectively M249), or a 40mm grenade launcher (MK 19, GMG). The practice in the AFK seems to be that these weapon stations are equipped only with M2HB-QCB machine guns. For machine gun lafetation, FN MAG weapon stations ZSRD 07 were acquired and grenade launchers (AGS-17) are carried on 44th and 74th lmopr hulls T810-V or at one time on Cowboys. Similarly, M151A2 were taken without smoke grenade launchers.

The first 30 LOV 50 B vehicles were delivered in 2010. The initial 20 examples were fitted with desert camouflage and WBS 2500 jammers, as most were intended for deployment with the 1st OMLT in Vardak province, Afghanistan. The first Czech Army unit to begin rearmament with the LOV 50 B was the 74th Light Motorized Battalion, as it was the first of a pair of newly formed motorized battalions to be designated for deployment in Afghanistan (10th PRT). The 74th Light Motorized Battalion also received at least one LOV 50 B (VPZ 317 74-39, this vehicle was later deployed to Mali in the EU TM mission) in desert camouflage. The IVECa did not gain much traction in the ranks of this unit, as it was also used to train soldiers from other units destined for deployment in Afghanistan (PRT and OMLT contingents). After about a year of service, the driver 74th lmopr had averaged about 1,000 km in the field on the LOV 50 B. The unit apparently acquired 36 examples of the LOV 50 B (for 3 infantry companies). The next unit to be rearmed is the 44th Light Motorized Battalion, in whose structure the LOV 50 Bs will arm two infantry companies (24 vehicles; the 3rd infantry company is armed with KBVP Pandur II CZ). The 44th Imopr formed the organizational core of the last 11th PRT unit.

At the turn of 2011 and 2012, the 102nd Reconnaissance Battalion began to be rearmed with LOV 50 B. In the ranks of its Heavy Reconnaissance Company (or 2nd Reconnaissance Company), it replaced the BVP-2 infantry fighting vehicles that were temporarily used there after the BPzV Svatava reconnaissance vehicles were retired. Twelve vehicles were 102nd Pzpr delivered without any special equipment. Their only "reconnaissance" sensors at first were only cameras built into the weapon station. Training on LOV 50 B was relatively slow, either because the unit formed the core of the 8th PRT unit at the turn of 2011 and 2012, or because there was no fuel. At the end of 2016, VOP CZ made technical modifications to the purpose-built superstructure and the addition of material for conducting reconnaissance on the LOV 50 B vehicles introduced with 102nd Reconnaissance Battalion, with an emphasis on the technical support of conducting ground reconnaissance without the need to power the systems from the vehicle's alternator while the engine is running. The modification involved the following elements:
- Vehicle body source system
- the AKB body compartment and the packaging storage compartment with the payload survey kit
- an ergonomically positioned DOLCH laptop with a pull-out
- vehicle window blackout and headlight kit
- folding SATCOM antenna protection - Harris radio antenna mounts in angled position
- footrest for easier access to the vehicle's cargo area
- mirror and headlight protection

Since March 2013, the trio of LOV 50 B has been operating in the EU TM mission (the Czechs were tasked with protecting the EU TM mission headquarters for the training of Malian soldiers, the facility was located in Bamako). Another LOV 50 B was deployed from October 2013 to March 2014 as part of the 1st Guard Company of the Bagram Air Field (BAF), tasked with securing a designated area of responsibility to eliminate enemy activity against Bagram Air Base. The unit was operationally subordinate to the US brigade designated as Joint Task Force 455 (JTF 455), which is responsible for protecting the base. The 1st BAF Guard Company operated in the northern part of JTF 455's area of responsibility (Kohistan District). However, LOV 50 B was used here only for movement around the airbase. The strength of Taliban IEDs at this time was already such that LOV 50 B's mine countermeasures had become largely ineffective. Thirty MRAP machines of the MaxxPro type loaned by the Americans were therefore used for patrols outside the base.

The Czech Army became fully responsible for protecting the outer perimeter of the exploded ammunition site in Vrbětice, Zlín Region, from Monday 15 December 2014, with soldiers of the 7th Mechanised Brigade playing a decisive role.
The government approved the deployment of soldiers within the Task Force of the Czech Armed Forces - Vrbětice to reinforce the activities of the Police of the Czech Republic until mid-2015. The soldiers were divided into two main groups. One remained in Vrbětice and the other was deployed in Haluzice. Guarding of the outer perimeter was provided both from fixed posts and by mobile patrols. The day and night patrols used the reconnaissance and observation systems of several LOV 50 B vehicles and one KBV-PZLOK Pandur II CZ from the armament of the 74th Light Motorized Battalion. The task of guarding the outer perimeter of the ammunition depot area, which is more than 20 kilometres long, started on Tuesday, 23 December 2014. Soldiers from 74th Light Motorised Battalion took over the task from 73rd Tank Battalion. LOV 50 B (VPZ 330 85-96) pictured in the 74th Light Motorized Battalion armory has a WBS 2500 jammer rigged against radio-launched improvised explosive devices.

The LOV 50 B (VPZ 331 68-54) assigned to the 7th ACR Unit, Mali - EU TM, based on 44th Light Motorised Battalion, protects the main entrance to the European Union Training Mission EUTM headquarters in Mali after a failed attack by a gunman whose lifeless body lies in a cluster of Malian soldiers. At 18.33 hours on Monday 21 March 2016, a man armed with an assault rifle of the AK-47 type attacked the main entrance to the EUTM headquarters compound in Mali, which was guarded by members of the 7th European Union Training Mission in Mali. "Czech soldiers took up a defensive position in accordance with the established procedures and returned fire after positive identification of the attacker. Subsequently, in cooperation with members of the Malian National Guard, they neutralized him on the spot. Our soldiers successfully repelled the attack on the EU TM mission headquarters in Bamako, while the attacker did not manage to penetrate the premises," Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces Josef Bečvář said about the incident. H. of 44th Light Motorized Battalion was subsequently awarded the CSDP Medal for Extraordinary Meritorious Service for his actions during the incident. H., as a member of the Force Protection Unit, was stationed at a hotel compound in Bamako, Mali, part of the Mission Headquarters base, on 21 March 2016, when the terrorist attack on the Headquarters occurred. H. was preparing his MINIMI 7.62 mm machine gun for firing, observing the situation and clarifying information with others present. As one of the attackers opened fire on the mission personnel who were in front of the hotel, Sgt. H. immediately responded and initiated combat activity by returning fire. Due to his quick and decisive response, the attacker was neutralized before he could injure or kill any of the civilian personnel or military members of the mission."

Following the request, two groups of rapid response teams from the 9th ACR were successively activated shortly after 16:00 local time on Sunday 18 June to engage the attackers in the Le Campement Kangaba compound. A group of jihadists attacked a hotel resort inhabited mostly by foreigners and took hostages. More than 30 people managed to escape, but four hotel guests were killed in the ambush. Upon arrival at the compound, Czech soldiers engaged in combat contact with the terrorists and then, in cooperation with members of the Malian armed forces and other forces, performed tasks to evacuate and rescue people from the attacked compound, provide first aid to the wounded and escort ambulances. The Czech soldiers then handed over the on-site task to other forces and returned to the EUTM headquarters in Bamako during the night. Five terrorists were killed during the rescue operation. Thirty-six persons were rescued, 13 of whom were French citizens.

On 10 October 2022, one LOV 50 B crashed on the 136th kilometre of the D1 motorway in the direction of Brno. The front tyre exploded while the vehicle was driving to Vyškov. As a result of the puncture, the car became uncontrollable and crashed into the noise barrier wall and subsequently into the central bollards. In addition to the driver, the vehicle was occupied by two fellow passengers who were slightly injured and the emergency medical service was therefore dispatched to the scene.
