Fokker Model 8 Super Universal began to arise in the american branch of the company NV Vliegtuigenfabriek Fokker as a development of their successful Fokker Universal in 1927. The Super Universal was slightly larger, and could carry six passengers instead of four. In addition, it was equipped with a more powerful engine Pratt & Whitney Wasp, samonosným wing without struts and krytýmm cockpit. The prototype was built in a factory in Teterboro and slightly differed from the serial machines - for example, should still "old-fashioned" wings protruding from the outline of the wings as in the netherlands Fokkerech Fokker F.IV and a fairly complex chassis. After its completion but he was once again assessed by the design team under the leadership of Bob Noorduyna, the wing was překonstruováno, modified the cockpit, the streamlined strut of the chassis and there have been other minor changes. The Super Universal was created at the same time as the Fokker F.10, which was also a product of the american branch, unlike F.10, in a substantially enlarged and improved F.VIIA, did not get a label in the row F. A short visit to originally Model 8 named Universal Special, but this name was soon replaced by the definitive Super Universal. The first flight occurred in march 1928, and shortly after the type entered mass production in the new factory in západovirginském Glen Dale.

The first serial machine, named Virginia, was used by admiral Richard E. Byrd as a rescue and reconnaissance aircraft for his antarctic expedition in 1928. In October of this year was the boat transported to the Dunedinu in New Zealand, with here, with other equipment, to the camp of Little America in Antarctica. There arrived 27. January 1929, and after completing and zalétání the same day made the two-hour research years during which it was discovered and named the Rockefeller mountains. On board at the time were the pilot Bernt Balchen (before working for the company Fokker) radio operator Harold June, and geologist Larry Gould. The same group is to place back in early march (Byrd himself preferred the more Ford Tri-Motor, in which, with Balchenem behind the wheel, flew over the south pole), which spent a week exploring the area and collecting samples. When they already were going to all wrap up, 15. march was a Virginia torn from the anchors of the impact by the wind and carried 700 m away, where it shattered, including radios, for years. A similar fate only by a miracle met even Gould, who tried to capture one of the restraint ropes and he was thrown into the air. For Virginia, the quest finally ended, her crew was four days later saved a third of the aircraft of the expedition and another of the competing types, the fairchild was backing FC-2W2.

Meanwhile, in the US, continued serial production. Orders was more than enough, the factory in Glen Dale barely able to keep up. In January 1931, it was built a total of 80 machines, which were flying e.g. in the Midcontinental Air Express, Standard Airlines, National Park Airways, and Universal Airlines. The us navy also ordered one machine, which was analyzed in 1928, under the designation XJA-1. Apart from Fokker F.VII but was not recommended for acceptance into service and was returned to the manufacturer. In addition to Canada, where he celebrated a similar success as its predecessor Universal, but the Model 8 abroad such a success he did not - with one exception. One machine for aerial photography purchased by the argentine navy, the other is given to civilian users in Colombia and South Africa. The exception then was Japan, which not only purchased a few machines but were also built several of my own adjustments.

As already mentioned, due to the success of the Universal in Canada Anthony Fokker predicted similar success for the Super Universal. But because the factory his the american society no longer sufficient kapaitu for orders from this country, suggested even in 1928, Western Canada Airlinesaby became his representative and manufacturer for Canada. WCA has agreed to the production itself, then forwarded as subkontraktorovi company Canadian Vickers in Montreal - coincidentally, he was the chairman of the WCA director of Canadian Vickers. During the next year received the first ojednávky from the canadian air force (1 pc), International Airways and General Airways and the production run. First in Montreal made the machine took off in the spring of 1929, in many ways different from the american model. The canadians added a second door to the right side of the fuselage, improved the electric circuits, they used a larger fuel tank, reinforced the hull and added the ability to use floats. Also tried to place Waspů use the engines of the Bristol Jupiter, but failed. Canadian machines, however due to these modifications weighed over 100 kg more than the us, production is delayed and the sale eventually also lagged, which certainly did not help the world financial crisis. In the end, it led to the fact that the production was terminated after only 15 pieces, some of which is from a warehouse managed with an appropriate discount to sell to in 1934.

In Japan, the Super Universal became the first type used by the newly created transportation companies Nihon Koku Juso To.To. When failed efforts to supplement or replace the Fokker machine of similar modes of home construction, the firm Nakajima nejpreva bought four machines in the form of components, which are then compiled, and then at the behest of the japanese office for aviation has received even license. Production in Ótě ran in September 1930 and later to engage and workshops of the manchurian carrier Manšú Koku To.To. In addition to civilian vehicles, which was built, probably only nine, were also military transport C2N, trainer Ki 6 and two ambulances machines. The first machines of the production license were also largely from imported parts and bore engines Nakajima Jupiter VI, the majority of but got a slightly more powerful home Nakadžimy Kotobuki. Usually it is placed 47 of machines of japanese manufacture, and sometimes almost 100, with some still in service even after the second world war.

Fokker Model 8 Super Universal with 80 built machine, not to mention about 70 canadian and japanese licensing of the machines, became the most successful of the american Fokker. Fokker Aircraft Corp. it basically reached its peak. In 1929 60 % of the shares bought by the giant automobile company, General Motors, and Anthony Fokker with his help, I was hoping to defeat their common main rival, Henry Ford. After disagreements with General Motors and the brief grounding of all F.VII and F.10 in the U.S. after the accident one of them disgusted with the Anthony Fokker left the business and the US to once again devoted himself mainly to his Dutch factory, and in the meantime renamed the General Aviation Manufacturing Corp. so she lost her main driving force. Two years still languished in the framework of General Motors and she looked in vain for the contract at the time of economic crisis, in 1933, it bought the starting holding North American Aviation, locked up all of its factory and moved it to the Dundalkfor. Here, the company was finally liquidated and the rest once the first large american factory, on transport aircraft in 1934 became the first manufacturing plant of the new giant of american aviation, North American Aviation.
