This 32-seater airliner was created in 1929 as Fokker's last civilian project in the United States. In a number of Fokker types in the US, it should be marked F.12 because it followed the F.11A amphibian, at the request of Western Air Express, which bought the first two machines but was given the name F.32, indicating its huge capacity at the time. Among the most interesting elements of the F.32 design were the use of four engines, which were placed in a tandem arrangement in gondolas under the wing, and the use of balsa in the fuselage structure for soundproofing. Due to its size, the F.32 had a triple rudder, the first machine had a double. It could carry up to 30 passengers, with seats in seven rows of four seats and two more seats under the cockpit in the bow. On board were two kitchens with a refrigerator and running water, two toilets, and the aircraft could also be configured in a bed version with 16 seats and a crew of five. For the first time ever, the seats were foldable. The location of the engines was chosen because it was expected to reduce the frontal resistance and thus increase speed. The front engine always had a two-bladed propeller, the thrust engine had a three-bladed propeller with a smaller diameter. To reduce resistance, the chassis fairing, including large "pants", was also tested.


The first takeoff took place on September 27, 1929. The X124M prototype, flying in WAE and Universal Air Lines, never actually served with any of these airlines - on November 27, 1929, just two months after its first takeoff, it crashed during a demonstration flight near Roosevelt Field on Long Island. When taking off from the airport, both engines on the left side gradually stopped, the machine turned to the side and crashed into a group of houses. The crew managed to escape just in time for the machine to be destroyed by fire. As a result, Universal canceled its order for five machines. The two Western Air Expres machines, which entered service in 1930 on their route from San Francisco to Los Angeles, were ultimately the only ones to be deployed - due to the high price ($ 110,000!), Operating costs during the economic crisis and technical problems were missing from those interested. Ten, more likely seven machines were allegedly built - a prototype X124M, a machine for the Army Air Force, three machines that remained in the hands of the manufacturer (NC335/336N, NC342N), and two machines for WAE (NC333N/334N), which canceled the order for another three and were therefore not built. However, WAE aircraft proved to be real hard workers, during the seven months of 1930, both F.32s were in the air for up to five hours a day, twice a day traveling to Los Angeles and back at a time when a regular transport aircraft flew for two hours a day. One of them eventually stayed in Los Angeles - after his elimination, he became a gas station on Wilshire Boulevard. The last machine, the NC342N, was eventually completed as a luxury "flying yacht" for Anthony Fokker, but in 1934 it ended as humiliatingly as a caravan in Wheeling and completely destroyed in 1937 during a flood.


It has already been mentioned that one machine was built for the Air Force. Renamed Fokker, General Aviation, in 1930 leased the F.32 NC130M USAAC for comparative testing. For the Air Force, it was the largest machine tested since Barling XNBL-1 in 1923. It received the designation YC-20, but because it was still the property of General Aviation, it did not receive a serial. Tests showed the same problem that caused the prototype accident - the tandem arrangement of the engines caused the rear engine to not be sufficiently cooled and also had low propeller efficiency due to turbulence created by the front propeller. This problem was never reliably solved, and in combination with the resulting not very interesting performance and high cost of maintenance led to the fact that the Air Force did not show interest and returned the YC-20 to the owner.


Despite this, the F.32 is now considered an aircraft ahead of its time. The Air Force acquired machines of similar size only during the war in the form of C-46 and C-47, which, however, in their civilian versions had a lower capacity.In addition, for Anthony Fokker, he was not only the largest and only four-engine type he built in the United States, but also his last type in the United States ever, in 1931, after quarrels with General Motors, the company's majority owner, Fokker moved back to the Netherlands. Here in 1934 he created a more or less successor, a four-engine airliner for 32 passengers Fokker F.XXXVI (number 36 again meant the number of people on board). However, it was much more modern, with engines in the wing, a fuselage of circular cross-section, albeit with a wooden wing, and was designed for the Amsterdam-Batavia route. Even this type was "killed" by high operating costs and only one was built.
