Operation Niwi

The more familiar airborne operations 10.may 1940 took place before the army Group B. Smaller landings before army Group in the belgian Ardennes and in the the grand duchy of Luxembourg provided a group of aeroplanes, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch concentrated in the department with code name Scout group 156. The most extensive operations was "Niwi" (the connection of the first syllables of the names of the target oplastí Nives and Witry), the aim of the operation Niwi was to keep the communication to the east from the Neufchateu open for the procedure XIX. army corps. To carry out the action was designated III. battalion Infantry regiment "GroßDeutschland under the command of lieutenant-colonel Eugene Garského. The training took place from February 1940 at the airport in Crailsheimu. The aim of the away team were landing area at the villages Nives and Witry. 3. battalion Infantry regiment GroßDeutschland, was divided into two groups, each consisted of a company of infantry, reinforced by heavy machine guns with the operator and the engineers. One of the group "Gruppe Süd" led the lieutenant-colonel Garski, the commander of the 3. the battalion was intended for Witry, according to the plan, the first wave of the landing party should participate in 56 Storchů, a total of Witry land 240 men. The second group "Gruppe Nord" commanded by captain Walter Krüger, should have 140 men, which should deliver 46 Storchů.
Fi 156 přelétly on the combat base the evening 09.05.1940. Machines for Witry were placed at the airport Dockendorf, aircraft for Nives deployed at the airport Pützhöhe. Launches into action started 04:20 pm in the morning 10.05.1940. In the first wave, it was 98 aircraft bearing 196 soldiers. Flew in two loose groups low over the terrain. At 04:30 pm were přeletěny the border of Luxembourg and at 04:50 pm the borders of Belgium. Head of aircraft north of the formation, the committed navigation errors, and its course is crossed with the southern group for its fifth machine, the pilot on the sixth plane along with the other incorporated into the assembly of the northern group. The southern group landed at 05:00 h in Witry with only five Storchy and dropped 10 men. The aircraft of the northern group along with the rest of the machines southern group due to a navigation error landed 15 km south from the Nives, most of them landed in the space Rancimontu. When landing causing damage to the machines, eight of which could not take off again. The soldiers got out into the interruption of telephone lines and confiscating vehicles to move north towards Nives. Soon there was a fight with two belgian teams of the 1. the regiment innocent ardennes hunters (Chasseurs Ardennais), which have a pair of light tanks, T-15. The belgians then strengthened several French armored cars out of 5. light cavalry division, which appeared south of the Léglise. Captain Krüger decided to retreat to the north and connect with the southern group. At 07:00 pm landed Storchy with the troops of the second wave in Witry, where in the meantime also occurred on the interruption of telephone lines and blockade of communications. At the Nives in the original location of the event landed at 07:05 am when the second wave of soldiers under the command of lieutenant Obermeiera, which initiated the blocking of the road separately. Even here there was a struggle with the Belgians and the French. In the evening, the Germans counter-attack of six French tanks forced out of the village Nives. Without the support of infantry but the French tanks had to of village download. Unplanned was organized by the third years Storchů to Witry, which should compensate for the dispersion and the losses of the previous two waves. The landing took place around ten o'clock. Garského men repelled the attempt of the Belgians on counteraction and occupied the village of Witry. Around noon, arrived from Léglise Krüger. The belgians managed to destroy the aircraft Junkers Ju 52/3m, Chaumontu, who landed with supplies and on the ground him off guard patrol soldiers accompanied by two light tanks, T-15, three shots tanks of the aircraft ignited. In Grand-Rosiere shot down the other belgian patrol next Junkers Ju 52/3m. The French shot down two Fi 156 flying supplies to the Nives.

Operation Niwi was standing Germans thirty of fallen soldiers, including personnel, downed aircraft of the Luftwaffe. From The Aufkl.Gr. 156 was lost 16 Storchů.

Other action
Smaller airborne actions took place directly on the territory of Luxembourg. In the south of the grand duchy, it was decided to perform the insertion in order to occupy five strategically important crossroads just south of city Luxembourg, in the area of Esch-sur-Alzette. Air the away team was assembled from volunteers 34. infantry division, called by the commander of the Luftlandekommando Hedderich and subject to the right of staff 16. army. Volunteers went through training in march 1940 at the airport Crailsheim and Böblingenu. 125 men will then rozdělo on the five assault groups, for each intersection, one for 25 men each. The armament of each of them consisted of five machine guns, anti-tank rifle and mines. For surgery has been allocated 25 Storchů from the airport of Trier-Eupen.
At 04:30 am in the morning 10.05.1940, the competition in action, the borders are přelétala in Waserbilligu at low altitude and up to the Luxembourg flew in one group, after five groups headed to their targets. Landing on the ground took place around five o'clock in the morning. Several aircraft crashed in the waterlogged soil. The first group landed 50 m from the road, which should ensure the junction in Bomichtu in Pétange. The second group to ensure the junction in Assen. The third group landed in waterlogged soil in Foetz and lost three of the Fi 156, which then ignited. The fourth group landed at the intersection in Mechalackeru and the fifth near the settlement of Frisange in Hau. The germans built up using barricades of trees, agricultural machinery and vehicles roadblocks on the main access road from the French border, and you've beefed up the mines. The unit 34. infantry division captured undamaged bridges across the Moselle and to send a forward group to strengthen Luftlandekommanda Hedderich. Of the forces 34. infantry division were created by three fighter groups (Jagdgruppe), which act in the forward sections (Vorausabteilung a And B). The French reaction carried out unit 3. light cavalry division stationed near the border with Luxembourg. Before 08:00 a.m. received its commander gen Petiet order to cross the border, penetrate the line of Rédange-Merch-Grevenmacher and start there destruction, which would have slowed the German advance. The worst French procedure took the fifth group por. Lauer, who fought to the last shell and was completely destroyed. Part of the men including the commander fell, the rest ended up in captivity. The group, lt. Heddericha in Aessenu did not save even the quick arrival of the fighter group. The germans have lost in the fight with 4. equestrian regiment of moroccan spahiů 16 killed and 13 captured men and Hedderich had four-the last soldiers to retreat into the nearby forest. The other group saved the quick arrival of the motorized forward to sections 34. infantry division, the losses there accounted for up to thirty men, and written off it was a total of 5 Storchů. Overall, even in places local to the French successes of the counterattacks 3. light cavalry division was soon stopped and the area was dominated by German 34. infantry division.

For Storchy meant operations in the belgian Ardennes and Luxembourg only this massive event, in addition to a few diverse events such as the liberation of the Mussolini, fulfil mainly the junction, an ambulance and observation tasks. Total came 10.05.1940 Aufkl.Gr. 156 of 22 aircraft, mostly it was the machine damaged in landing, which were set afire by their own crews. Two pilots died and several remained unaccounted for.
