Differences compared to the version T-54A:

Modernization of the T-54A tank


The issue of the T-54A tank modernization was first addressed in an ideological way at a meeting of the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the CSLE for Material Matters in the spring of 1964. The meeting was attended by experts from the TEES Martin development centre and the technical department of the Military Technical Academy A. Zápotocký in Brno. At the beginning of July 1964, a working meeting was convened at TEES Martin with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of General Engineering on T-54A modernisation issues. During the meeting, issues related to the repair capacity of the military enterprises of the Ministry of Defence and the production of the necessary component base for the modernisation were discussed.


The T-54A modernization itself was only conceptually addressed within the CSRL after a meeting of the Technical Council of the Chief of the General Staff in late 1964. Its essence was to overhaul the T-54A tanks and modernize them using T-55 tank aggregates so that their technical parameters matched those of the T-55A tanks. In the summer of 1965, the measures taken were consulted with the experts of the Military Repair Plant in Zhytomyr (today's Ukraine). During the consultations, the correctness of the Czechoslovak concept was confirmed. At the beginning of August 1965, the Ministry of Defence selected the Military Repair Enterprise 025 Novy Jicin (VOP 025) as the solver for the task of modernising the T-54A tank. After consultations with the TEES Martin development centre, the enterprise submitted a documentary report to the MNO in autumn 1965, which specifically addressed the task of T-54A modernisation. At the beginning of November 1965, after the Ministry had clarified its requirements, VOP 025 began construction of a prototype of the modernized tank. In late April 1966, the prototype was inspected by members of the Military-Technical Council of the MNO, who, immediately after the inspection, submitted the task of modernization to the Military Commission of the Central Committee of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. On 5 May 1966, the latter approved the modernisation of the T-54A tank into the T-54M tank. A few days later, the prototype was put through its company and inspection trials at VOP 025. During the tests, failures occurred on the engine, stabilizer, and fire suppression equipment. After the faults were eliminated, the prototype was taken over by the Military Test Centre 020 Doksy (hereinafter referred to as VZS 020). It carried out intensive driving-technical and shooting tests with the prototype, during which the vehicle passed. After the tests, the prototype was kept by VOP 025 Nový Jičín as a model vehicle. Tests with the second prototype built at the beginning of 1967 were again in VZS 020 Doksy. The prototype succeeded in demanding driving and shooting tests, on the basis of which the MNO-TAS commission recommended its introduction into the armament of the CSRLA.


In 1968-1975, 700 T-54As were upgraded to T-54Ms at VOP 025 Nový Jičín, and another 500 tanks were upgraded by Zavody ťažkého strojárstva Martin.


Compared to the T-54A tank, the modernized T-54M was equipped with:


- crew protection against the effects of WMD, a new gun stabilizer in two planes,
- new night firing devices,
- a more powerful V-54M engine,
- a liquid-assisted directional control booster,
- improved deep-wading equipment "RIEKA".


From 1973 to 1980, all T-54M tanks were successively armed with 12.7 mm PLG DŠKM vz. 38/46, the lafette of which was mounted on the turret of the loader.


Organizationally, T-54M tanks formed the armament of tank battalions of motorized artillery regiments, tank regiments of motorized artillery divisions and independent training battalions in military training areas until 1989.


They began to be phased out of the CSLA armament in 1990. Their actual liquidation under the provisions of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe took place between 1992 and 1994.


Two pieces of this tank (one with turret number 012) are in the collections of VHM Piešt'any.

Pokud si pamatuji na dobu VZS v letech 1972-74, kdy jsem dělal velitele tanku, tak tanky T-54M a T-55A měly pouze 1 spřažený kulomet 7,62 mm. DŠK, pokud se nemýlím, se montovala až koncem 70. let. V T-54M byly RDST R-113 a v T-55A byly RDST R-123.


Pokud se nemýlim, T-54 už stabilizátor měla.
