MBT-2000 is a tank upgrade designation Type 90-II primarily intended for export. Development in cooperation with Pakistan took place in the years 1991-1999, while the final version of the tank was also referred to as Type 90-IIM.

The basis for the development of the tank was a tank Type 90-II with a Perkins CV12-1200 engine with an output of 895 kW (1200 hp) and a digital fire control system. As part of the development, several tank configurations were tested, differing in motorization, armament, fire control system and protection.

One of the tested versions was a tank equipped with a French fork diesel engine with an output of 1500 hp referred to as Type 90-IIA, preferred by Pakistan. Due to the embargo that France imposed on Pakistan after the nuclear tests in 1998, the development of this version was stopped.

In 1999, 4 prototypes were finally finalized, designated P1 to P4. Prototypes P1 to P3 were equipped with a Chinese 125mm smooth-walled cannon (based on the Soviet cannon 2A46 with automatic charging, prototype P4 was equipped with a 120mm cannon adapted for use of NATO ammunition standards.

The P1 prototype was further equipped with a Chinese fire control system and a German MTU-396 engine and an LSG-3000 automatic transmission manufactured under a Chinese license.

The P2 prototype was further equipped with an unspecified fire control system of "western" origin, a Perkins 1200 hp Condor engine and a French SESM ESM500 automatic transmission.

The P3 prototype was further equipped with an unspecified fire control system of "western" origin, a Ukrainian engine from the Kharkov engineering plant 6TD-2 with a power of 1200 hp and a French automatic transmission SESM ESM500.

Prototype P4 with a 120mm cannon compatible with NATO ammunition and an unspecified fire control system of "western" origin was equipped with a German diesel engine MTU-871/TCM AVDS-1790 and an automatic transmission LSG-3000.

The P3 prototype (also known as Type 90-IIM) was presented at an international exhibition in 2001 in Abu Dhabi and offered at export under the name MBT-2000. The Pakistani tank Al Khalid is based on the same prototype.

The latest version of the MBT-2000 is the VT-1A tank for export. Unlike prototypes, it is equipped with purely Chinese subsystems, including a 1300 hp engine. The VT-1A tank was exported to Bangladesh, Myanmar, Morocco and probably to Sri Lanka. Peru also showed interest in deliveries, although the contract was not concluded.

In this year, i.e. 2013, should be completed delivery of 44 of these tanks in the version of the Type 90-II/MBT 2000 to Bangladesh and the license production of 500 machines of Al Khalid in Pakistan also currently underway (by the end of 2012 made 298 machines).
