Just after the First World War in the 1920s, a secret project for the development of light and medium category tanks was launched in Germany. It was secret because of the restrictive measures contained in the Treaty of Versailles, which prohibited the development, production and use of any tank technology.
In 1925, under the code name Armeewagen 20, specifications were entered for a new medium tank.

The competition for the new tank was attended by companies Daimler-Benz, Rheinmetall-Borsig and Krupp. Each of the companies had to build two prototypes of unarmoured steel (6-14 mm). The companies were to produce the individual components and send them to the company Rheinmetall-Borsig, where the individual machines were to be assembled. Work on the machines began in 1925 and the planned tests were to take place in 1929/30. The projects of the individual companies were very similar and bore the characteristic features of the structures of that time. The body was high, the chassis consisted of a number of small wheels and they were multi-tower constructions. In addition to the main tower, the machines also had a rear machine gun turret, which did not have a circular measurement. The sides of the machines and their chassis parts were covered by sheet metal aprons. The machines had three support rollers. Each machine had holes for maintenance in these aprons, each type had a different shape and size. Propulsion during the voyage was provided by propellers in the rear of the machines.

The machine of the company Daimler-Benz was constructed under the direction of dr. Porscheho. Two pieces of unarmoured steel were built (Nr.41 in 1929 and Nr.42 in 1930). One of the prototypes was later armed with a 7.5 cm cannon with a longer barrel (see photo below)? Rather, it seems to me that it is just a monumental arrangement. Due to problems with the propulsion system, the tests of the machines were stopped and the project was canceled.
The prototypes were secretly tested in 1933 in the Soviet Union at the base of Kama. Despite modifications, the prototypes suffered from many problems during the tests, and the Grosstraktor's projects were stopped and canceled. The prototypes of Daimler-Benz ended up as monuments. One prototype stood in front of the barracks of the headquarters 1.Panzer Regiment in Erfurt and the other prototype in front of the barracks 5.Panzer Regiment in Wünsdorf. Company prototypes Krupp and Rheinmetall-Borsig served after training as training vehicles in school units and participated in maneuvers of the German army v 8/1935 in rows 1.Panzer-Division. After 1935, they worked as training machines in the tank school in Putlos. In 1937, one prototype of the company Krupp and one prototype of the company Rheinmetall-Borsig were used as monuments in the barracks [i ] 5.Panzer Regiment vo Wünsdorfe. The remaining two prototypes ended up either at the scrap yard or as training targets.
The knowledge gained from the Grosstraktor program was used in another tank project of a similar concept Neubaufahrzeug.
