Production of tanks in Poland after 1945
Author: Ivan Banged

Already in 1948 it was decided to license the production of tanks T-34/85 in Poland, but the problems with the preparation of this project caused such a delay that the first ten pieces of the Polish army to take over until early in 1953. In total, in the years 1952 to 1956, made 1355 tanks like the T-34/85, most of which served in the Polish army. Export success was recorded in the end of production, when in 1956 it was sold to the 135 machines. Most of them, and it's 130 pieces, received the army of the GDR.

In 1956 came the production of tanks series T-54, from 1959 T-54A and, since 1962, the T-54AM. The total was in Poland between the years 1956 to 1964 made 1998 pieces of the T-54 different versions. Of this number was 636 pieces exported and mainly again to the GDR (488 pieces).

From 1964 began the production of T-55 tanks and their modifications. This year left the production line the first ten pieces, and in 1979 was in the Bumar-Labedy made approximately 5000 of these vehicles. In some years reached a production of 600 units per year. Of this number was more than half exported. In Bumaru Labedy ran also manufacture bridge tanks BLG-67 and rescue WZT-1 followed by the type WZT-2. This was made in more than 600 pieces and also exported, for example to India, where it was exported 196 specimens.

In 1979, she started preparing for the production of T-72 tanks. From Nizhny Tagil was delivered the first ten T-72M in a disassembled state, and during the year 1981 were these machines assembled and subjected to intensive testing. The Polish army of this vehicle took away 19. July 1982. Because of the production of T-72 was significantly more challenging than production of the T-55, does not exceed the annual reference to the quantities manufactured vehicles of 250 units. So in total it was in Poland in 1990 made 1610 medium tanks T-72M and T-72M1 (production since 1986). Almost half of these tanks were again exported, and mainly to the GDR, Hungary, Iraq, Iran, Yemen and Syria.

In the second half of the 80. years launched Poland with the Soviet union negotiations on the handover of documentation for the production of T-72S. The agreement, however, has not happened because the Poles claimed that it is only on the upgraded machine, whereas the Russians had a version of that it is a completely new tank, and so is the need to sign a new license agreement. Of course this would be a completely different amount of money. The poles have therefore decided to undertake an extensive modernization of tanks T-72M1 themselves and as a result became a PT-91 Twardy (Hard).

Prototype testing was conducted during the years 1991 to 1993 and the serial production came in 1994. During the first years of production (1994 to 1997) was constructed approximately 100 completely new PT-91 and then to this standard upgrade during overhaul other machines, the T-72M1. Total to the year 2002 took over the Polish army 233 medium tanks PT-91 Twardy.
On the chassis of the T-72 was also made a recovery tank WZT-3. This vehicles of the Polish army took over just about 30 pieces. Export success but came in India, where it was exported 352 of these funds.
PT-91 has reached also the export earnings, and it win the tender launched in Malaysia on the equipment of the army medium tank. During the years 2006 - 2008 there was delivered to the 48 PT-91M six rescue WZT-4, five bridge tanks PMC-Leguan and three engineer tanks MID-M. Malaysia planning the construction of another tank battalion and certainly decide to buy another PT-91M.

During the production of the T-54 in ZM Labedy started also with the preparation for the production of tracked artillery tractors. It was the type of , the Mazur D-350 own design. In 1959 a decision was made on the launch of its serial production. Mazury were, however, produced only two years (1960 and 1961) and from the assembly of the belt rolled around thousands of these tractors. ENSAMBLE purchased 218 Mazurů and at the beginning of the 70's. years was from the surplus of the Polish army of 50 pieces sent to the Vietnamese democratic republic.

A mayfly life on the production belt owes , the Mazur D-350 the Soviet union, since the one in 1960, has asked the government to PLR about the licensed production of artillery tractor ATS-59 (Object 650), in Poland, with an annual collection of at least 600 pieces. The poles replied that they were already running installation Mazurů and they offered this tractor to the Soviets. The USSR, however, insisted on comparative tests on the territory of the union under the supervision of the intergovernmental commission. These tests didn't turn out for the Poles well, as the ATS-59 was recognized in all the parameters as a better. And so from the year 1962 run production license "ATSu" in Labedach place Mazuru D-350. By the year 1968 were produced in several thousand tractor ATS-59. All took the Soviet union which is then further reexportoval, often to countries paying "hard" currency (Finland, Yugoslavia,...).

In 1968 there was a change on the assembly line of caterpillar trucks and ATS-59 was replaced by a modernized vehicle ATS-59G (Object 668). Its mass production began in 1969 and the scale of production reached the level of 1,000 to 1,500 units per year. To the end of production in 1991 was made more than 22 000 trucks, ATS-59G. Even in the last year of production was completed 600 vehicles. Bumar Labedy was also from 1. January 1975 the only producer of this type of artillery tractor. Almost all vehicles went again to the Soviet Union with the subsequent reexportem (Romania, Yugoslavia, Ethiopia, Libya,...)..
