PT-91M Pendekar

Export version of the medium tank PT-91A1 for Malaysia.

On April 11, 2003, Malaysia awarded a contract worth approximately US$370 million, which included the delivery of 48 PT-91M medium tanks, 3 MID-M engineer tanks, 6 WZT-4 dump tanks, 5 PMC bridge tanks and other equipment. A portion of the contract was paid for by the delivery of 300,000 tons of Malaysian palm oil at a cost of about $111 million. As part of the offsets, Poland had to arrange for the transfer of part of the technology and purchase goods from Malaysia for about USD 70 million.

The PT-91M was selected by the Malaysian military based on comparative tests with the Russian T-90 and Ukrainian T-84 tanks. However, during the tests, both competitors suffered such failures that they were virtually immobilized. This was probably one of the deciding factors, as the PT-91M, with its price reportedly around $4.5 million, was approximately twice as expensive as both the T-90 and the T-84.

In August 2005, the first PT-91M prototype was delivered to Malaysia. A week after delivery aboard An-124, this example took part in a military parade on the streets of the Kuala Lumpur metropolis on 31 August. Between September and December 2005, it then engaged in rigorous military trials. While everything worked smoothly during the tests in Poland, not only the engine, but also the tank's air-conditioning had problems with the harsh onslaught in Malaysia. The Malaysian government gave the manufacturer a year to fix the problems. As a result of the tests, modifications were incorporated into the 1st batch, which was currently being assembled at ZM Bumar's Łabędy plant. During 60 days of testing in 2007, the modified PT-91M prototype covered 3,850 kilometres (an amount the manufacturer says should be equivalent to about 13 years of service) and fired 250 rounds from the gun. At the same time, retraining courses for Malaysian army personnel were launched in Poland. A total of 128 soldiers received training ranging from three weeks to six months (depending on the type of expertise).
Deliveries of the PT-91M to the user started in the summer of 2007. The last of the ordered vehicles was originally scheduled to arrive by the end of 2008. However, only 30 units were due to be delivered at the end of this year, with the remainder due to arrive in Malaysia by March 2009. The tanks have been assigned to the 11th Tank Regiment (Rejimen-11 Kor Armor DiRaja) of the 4th Mechanised Brigade, garrisoned in Gemas in the state of Negeri Sembilan on the Malay Peninsula.

The main difference of the PT-91M from its predecessors in the PT-91 series is the use of the French company Sagem's Savan 15 fire control system instead of the original Drawa-T. From Sagem also comes the VIGY 15 panoramic commander's sight and the SIGMA 30 navigation system. The tank is equipped with the SSP-1 Obra-3 laser irradiation warning system. The reactive armour is of the Erawa-2 type. The 902A smoke grenade launchers of 81 mm calibre were supplied by ZM DEZAMET.

The armament consists of a Slovak cannon 2A46MS with a new electronic stabilisation system from EADS, a coupled machine gun FN MAG and an anti-aircraft machine gun M2HB-QCB.

The tanks are equipped with Type 570P rubber-tired tracks, manufactured by the German company Diehl Remscheid. Under contract, the rubber feet were manufactured under a Malaysian licence.

Also new is the communications equipment, which consists of PR4G radios and SOTAS intercom, both from Thales of France.

The power unit is a 1000 hp S-1000R diesel engine manufactured in Poland by PZL-Wola S.A. The gearbox is of the ESM 350M type (8 forward and 3 reverse gears), manufactured by SESM (a subsidiary of the German Renk).
