In 1944, a year of retreats and defensives by the German army, there was an acute need for mobile artillery armament in conventional infantry units. For in the retreat battles the prevailing shortage of towed artillery resulted in high losses of conventional towed artillery weapons. Many were destroyed by their own units precisely because of their immobility. Guns such as the 7.5 cm PaK 40, 8.8 cm PaK 43, and 10.5 cm leFH 18 were too heavy for the operator and difficult to handle.
At the 20 January 1944 negotiations on new weapons, after discussions on the new PaK 42 L/60 and L/70 towed guns, it was decided that the ideal solution would be to motorize the artillery. Anti-tank guns and light field howitzers were to be mounted on light standardised platforms (Einheitsfahrgestell).
Specifications for the new waffenträger are given in the topic 8.8 cm PaK 43 Ardelt.
Vehicles were to be created that were to have a max. 1750 mm in height, an 8.8 cm L/71 gun with 50 rounds of ammunition (20 rounds in the standby position) was to be mounted in a fully rotating turret, the elevation was to range from -8° to +45°, and the optical equipment of the gun was specified, the vehicle was to have a radio, a smoke grenade launcher, if the design allowed it, it was to have secondary armament with a machine gun, the plans also included a hinged gun for firing machine guns. The armour of the machine was to be 20 mm in the exposed frontal part, 10 mm on the sides, the maximum speed of the vehicle was to be 35 km/h on the road and 30 km/h off-road, the range was to be 140-200 km, the ground clearance 450 mm, the maximum ground pressure 0.7 kg/cm2 and the crew was to consist of 4 - 5 men. The gun was to be based on the design elements of the PaK/KwK 43 and cooperating pairs of companies were formed to work together on modifications to the weapon. The company Krupp was to modify the gun for the company Steyr and the company Rheinmetall-Börsig for the company Ardelt.

Representatives of Krupp, Rheinmetall-Börsig together with representatives of the arms authorities [i:WaPrüf 6 and WaPrüf 4 discussed the specifications with representatives of Steyr on 4.2.1944 in Berlin (negotiations with the rival company Ardelt took place the day before on 3.2.1944). Three alternatives were considered as to which gun should be used on the fighter. These were 8.8 cm PaK 43/41 by Rheinmetall-Börsig, 8.8 cm PaK 43 Kreuzlafette by Krupp or 8.8 cm PaK 43/3 by Krupp. The cessation of production of the PaK 43/41 by Rheinmetall-Börsig in the spring of 1944 eliminated this gun from further consideration. The final choice fell on the modified 8.8 cm KwK 43 tank gun. The firm Steyr was commissioned to develop and build two prototype chassis (one for the WaPrüf 4 and one for the WaPrüf 6), and the firm [iaa]Krupp was to supply the turret with the gun. An interesting feature was the possibility of moving the turret with the help of a crane (it was to be towed behind the vehicle, see the towing device on the prototype ????). The deadline was crazy, the prototype was to be ready in 5/1944. Negotiations continued and the order was changed to the construction of a full-size wooden mock-up and four prototypes. Further negotiations between the companies and military institutions involved on the details of the design were discussed on 2/24/1944. The firm Steyr created a platform that used components of the Steyr RSO artillery tractor. A mock-up of the vehicle was completed on March 20, 1944 and Adolf Hitler presented to Hitler on his birthday on April 20, 1944.
The machine was to be powered by a Steyr(140 hp) 12-cylinder "boxer" engine, but its development was not yet complete at that time. The Praga EPA AC/2 (180 hp) engine used in the new Jagdpanzer 38(t) tank fighter was considered. Due to the fledgling series production, it would not be available in sufficient quantities. Other alternatives were a Klöcker-Deutz diesel 8-cylinder engine (140 hp), or a Maybach HL engine, but in this case the steering components would have to be adapted. Problems arose when considering the use of the steering system and tracks from the RSO. The WaPrüf 6 suggested using tracks from a Pz.Kpfw.IV tank. Plans to build a prototype were delayed due to technical and production problems. The Steyr company had problems with the engine, the development of which was continuously prolonged. After information from the factory about the completion of the prototype, the machine was to be moved to Meppen for firing tests. The machine is further mentioned in a report of a planned demonstration to Adolf Hitler on 2 September 1944. The Steyr-Krupp machine was to be ready by 9.10.1944 together with the Ardelt-Rheinmetall and Krupp-Ardelt prototypes. The date and location of the demonstration of the new waffenträger has not been decided. The program of these tank fighters was halted due to lack of material for production.

A report dated 31.3.1945 lists this prototype in the status of a non-mobile platoon in Panzer-Kompanie Kummersdorf.
