History of Sd.Kfz.184 - Ferdinand
After losing the competition for the production of heavy tank companies Porsche with Henschel, started in April 1941 heavy tank fighter project Ferdinand.
Henschel under the direction of dr. ing. Erwin Aderse prepared his more conservative designed machine VK 45.01 (H), the second company with professor Porsche developed a vehicle VK 45.01 (P), using benzinoelectric propulsion. Porsche counted on the victory of his "horse" so much that he gave the order to start production of the first series (100 pieces). After tests of both prototypes on April 20, 1942 at the test site at Rastenburg, Aders' project was accepted, on the basis of which a heavy tank began to be produced. PzKpfw VI Tiger. But already in the factory of Niebelungenwerke (belonging to the company Steyr-Daimler-Puch), located in the Austrian St. Valentin, production was in full swing. September 22, 1942 it was decided to convert to a self-propelled gun with 88 mm (PaK 43/2 with a main length of 71 caliber) cannon, 200 mm front armor, side armor and rear wall 80 mm, the tub was reinforced from the existing 100 mm by screwing an additional plate of the same thickness, the upper part of the vehicle body was modified and its rotating tower completely disappeared. Instead, a massive square welded superstructure appeared in the rear of the car, hiding the crew's combat space. Until then, unusually strong armor provided the crew with protection from artillery fire and ensured a high percentage of probability of survival.
Thus, production continued and in this way 91 self-propelled guns with serial numbers 150010 to 150100 were created. This happened in the period from February to April 1943. The machine was named after the first name of Professor Porsche ( Ferdinand ]).

Sd.Kfz.184 - Elephant
47 Ferdinands capable of modernization underwent overhauls and additional improvements, which were carried out very quickly. 20 machines were upgraded in February, the remaining 27 in March.
The machines were given a shooting range for a machine gun in the front armor of the hull controlled by a radio operator, installation of a command tower and modification of the shield on the main cannon, the upper plate of the armor above the engine was improved, exhausts modified, powerful fire extinguishers installed. Certain modifications also affected the electrical equipment and the propulsion unit, the emphasis was on improving protection against damage by anti-tank mines. A new gutter appeared on the front panel of the battle area, draining rainwater from the roof of the vehicle to the sides, thus preventing water from entering the engine compartment. The exterior of the machine was also marked by the fact that the maintenance tool box, previously attached to the sides, moved to the rear.
The vehicles before the modernization also received a new name Elephant * (elephant), the designation Sd.Kfz.184 remained the original.
In addition to these changes, there were 3 machines rebuilt into rescue vehicles, known as Bergetiger (P).

Diskuse

Ferdinand v. Elefant

Minor note about the name change. May I quote loosely translated paragraph from English written work "Myths about Panzer", mr Christian Ankerstjerna, from the Danish IPMS, published on http://www.panzerworld.net/facts.html

"... Despite the widespread belief that changing the name of "Ferdinand" to "Elefant" occurred during a remodel of tank fighters in the period between January 1944 and march 1944, is the opposite of the truth, change the suggested Adolf Hitler 29. November 1943. For the vehicle with the new name were issued two orders, and it 1. February 1944 and 27. February 1944 ...".

From the first post shows that the FE should benzinoelektrický drive. As far as I know (I wrote about this in the "Heavy guns..."), used to BE the drive to transport RU, and then our heavy guns since the beginning of WW I.
Mr. Porsche on this principle made a tank chassis? And that was as complicated rejected? At a time when mechanical gear struggled with the difficulties?
It's staring! (Tanks certainly are not and were not my cup of tea, but just this would make me quite interested!

Who knows more details ?!? Please!.

FANTAN:

F. Porsche tried to promote a similar propulsion. He used it in several projects that were to lead to a heavy type of tank (later Tiger) VK3001 (P), VK4501 (P), from which Ferdinand/Elefant, VK4502 (P) -Porsche attempt in competition for Tiger II.
The reason for the failure to implement this solution was in production complexity, cost and maintenance (taking care of two gas stations and the electrical wiring and electric motors themselves is a real chore for production and maintenance). but in the case of large series production, the consumption of scarce strategic raw materials (copper for winding coils) would be enormous, expensive and, in fact, due to their scarcity, production would stagnate. fighting troops.
