BVP-1

Soviet infantry fighting vehicle BMP-1 produced under Czechoslovak license.

The BVP-1 is an amphibious tracked combat vehicle designed to increase the mobility and firepower of motorized units and to destroy armored targets and enemy live fire.

Based on a 1966 licensing agreement between Czechoslovakia and the USSR, production documentation was supplied, which led to the production of a verification series of BVP-1 vehicles in 1968. Following design changes, serial production began in 1970 and continued until 1987. A total of 17 295 BVP-1 vehicles in the basic version were produced in the USSR.

The first CSAF unit to be rearmed with the BVP-1 was the 49th Motorized Artillery Regiment stationed in Mariánské Lázně in 1974. The following year, the 57th Motorized Artillery Regiment in Stříbro was rearmed. In 1976, the 10th Motorized Artillery Regiment from Janovice completed its rearmament. A year later, the BVP-1 vehicles entered the arsenal of the 3rd and 79th Artillery Regiment. In 1978 they were rearmed 62nd and 9th Motorized Artillery Regiment. In 1979, BVP-1s were introduced into the armament of 5th Motorized Artillery Regiment. Between 1974 and 1976, 2 companies of the 8th (fully rearmed in about 1979) and 63rd Motorized Artillery Regiment (fully rearmed in about 1980) were rearmed.
In 1981, OT-62 all motorized rifle companies of the 1st, 9th and 4th Panzer Division tank regiments were rearmed from OT-62 to BVP-1. For the remaining tank divisions, this rearmament took place in 1982. As of 1 July 1988, there were 2,074 BVP-1 vehicles in the CSLA's armament.

Approximately 5100 Czechoslovak-built BVP-1s were reportedly to be exported to the Soviet Union.

As of 31 December 1997, a total of 597 BVP-1 vehicles and 18 examples of the commander's version BVP-1K were in the armament of the Czech Armed Forces.

At the time of its introduction into the armament of the then CSLA, the type was designated OT-70, later renamed BVP-1.

Attached are photos of one of the BVP-1s of the Czech KFOR contingent, according to those involved these vehicles still attract a lot of attention from our allied colleagues (in this case a Danish lieutenant).
There is quite an interesting camouflage on the vehicle and the pictures (Bart and the devil) testify to the clearly personal relationship of the gunner operator and the driver to the vehicle... inu, what we were not allowed to do before is now recognized as an expression of "esprit de corps".
I made the people involved "black people" for good measure, just so they wouldn't feel offended.
Even in the picture with three of ours, the Danish officer is said to be enjoying the comfort of the driver's seat lowered into the combat position at that moment...

BVP-1 alias BWP-1 and the Polish Army

The Polish Army still has 1,297 older BVP-1s, which were purchased in the Czechoslovakia between 1973 and 1988. Between 1973 and 1980, 629 vehicles were purchased, and during 1981-88 another 668. Interestingly, Poland began to prepare the licensed production of BVP-1s in 1967 at Huta Stalowa Wola under the designation TB-40 (transporter bojowy). 85% of the design documentation was taken from the USSR, 70% of the technological documentation, and assembly halls were also built. In the autumn of 1969, the whole programme, despite the fact that 600 million zlotys had already been invested, was cancelled as too costly by Wladyslaw Gomulka. Following this decision, Czechoslovakia took over the licensed production of the BVP-1, having not previously agreed to joint production of these vehicles with Poland. Probably as a result of the experience with the production of OT-64.

Diskuse

Did we export BVP-1s to Iraq? Or are the photos of destroyed Iraqi equipment Soviet BMP-1?

Hard to say. Given how much BVP-1 was produced, I would guess that some made it to Iraq. I can only say with certainty that no BVP-1s were delivered to Iraq until 1980 (at least not directly from the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic).
