BVP-2

Soviet infantry fighting vehicle BMP-2 produced under Czechoslovak license.

The BMP-2 is an amphibious armoured tracked combat vehicle designed to increase the mobility and firepower of mechanised units and to destroy armoured targets and enemy live fire. The combat crew can consist of up to 10 persons. The crew consists of a commander, a gunner and a driver. The swarm may consist of up to seven persons armed with the organic armament of the squad. The swarm is capable of conducting aimed small arms fire with the firing ports mounted on the sides and rear of the vehicle hull. The BVP-2 is structurally divided into four compartments: the engine-gear compartment, the driver's compartment, the combat compartment and the swarm compartment. The combat compartment is located in the central part of the vehicle behind the engine and driver compartments. This compartment houses the armament, ammunition, observation and targeting instruments, the control consoles of the various systems, and the commander's and gunner operator's workstations in the turret. The swarm compartment designed for 6 persons is located in the rear of the vehicle.

It is armed with a 30mm automatic cannon 2A42 stabilized in two planes and a 7.62mm tank machine gun PKT to engage enemy assets including tanks and attack helicopters. The cannon is primarily designed to engage lightly armoured targets up to 1,500m away. Low-altitude air targets can be shot at up to 2,000 m. The maximum range of the 2A42 is 10,300 m. The gun can be fired in single shots and bursts. The rate of fire with a small cadence is 200 to 300 rounds/min, with a large cadence 500 rounds/min. Three types of ammunition are used for firing: a penetrating luminous, a fragmentary luminous and a fragmentary-tearing incendiary. The firing diameter is contained in two cartridge belts, which are placed in magazines and moved by the cannon's feeding system. A school cartridge is provided for training in reloading.

The PKT machine gun can conduct fire against a live force up to 1,500 m away. The turret houses a launcher 9P135M for anti-tank guided missiles 9M111 Fagot and 9M113 Konkurs, which allows the crew to conduct fire without having to leave the vehicle. A portable device is carried inside the vehicle that allows the 9M111 and 9M113 missiles to be fired outside the vehicle when the control panel is mounted. The anti-tank missiles allow you to engage enemy tanks up to 4000 m away. The firing cadence of cruise missiles is 2 to 3 missiles/min. The minimum firing distance is 75 m.

The BVP-2 can overcome water obstacles by swimming. The machine is equipped with equipment to protect the crew and the swarm against the effects of pressure waves and radiation penetration, to protect against chemical agents and to protect against radioactive dust when driving in an infested area. The vehicle is equipped with a smoke screen and a set of smoke grenade launchers mounted on the turret to create a smoke screen.

The first thirty BVP-2 (or BMP-2) vehicles were introduced into the 3rd Motorized Artillery Regiment in Louny in 1983, and were Soviet-made machines. Serial production of the BVP-2 under Czechoslovak licence did not begin until 1987. Other units armed with this type were 79th and 63rd Motorized Artillery Regiment. As of 1 July 1988, 41 BVP-2s were in the CSLA's arsenal. In 1989, the BVP-2s were delivered to the 67th Motorized Artillery Regiment, and a year later the 11th Motorized Artillery Regiment was to be re-equipped, but this never happened. As of 31 October 1990, the Czechoslovak army had a total of 252 BVP-2 vehicles. A total of 280 BVP-2s were introduced into the Czechoslovak army.

Between 1987 and 1989, a total of 344 BVP-2s in the basic version were produced in Czechoslovakia. As of 31 December 1997, a total of 186 of these vehicles were in the armament of the Czech Armed Forces. As part of the reorganisation of the Czech Armed Forces in 2003, BVP-2 vehicles remained in the 4th Rapid Deployment Brigade and 7th Mechanised Brigade. After the rearmament of the former bundle with KBVP Pandur II CZ machines at the turn of the first decade of the new millennium, 71. Mechanized Battalion, 72nd Mechanized Battalion and the mechanized company 73rd Tank Battalion of the 7th Mechanized Brigade. With the reorganization of the 74th Light Motorized Battalion into the 74th Mechanized Battalion in 2020, 15 BVP-2 vehicles have been introduced into the unit's armament as an interim solution until a new infantry fighting vehicle is introduced.

During the transfer of a mechanised company, the driver lost orientation while driving the vehicle in the combat position... Adverse weather also contributed significantly to the accident, fortunately nobody was hurt (except for scrapes and bruises). The whole incident was solved by a technical lockdown - VPV with the help of a second BVP-2.

Czech BVP-2 in Afghanistan

The BVP-2 intended for deployment in Afghanistan as part of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in VOP 026 has undergone a comprehensive overhaul and refurbishment of all parts and systems. Due to its deployment on Afghan territory, it also received specific modifications. The inner parts of the hull and turret assemblies are lined with special thermal insulation material, the surface of the vehicles also received a sand camouflage.

The first two vehicles were moved to the Brno-Tuřany airport on Thursday 28 February 2008, where they were loaded together with other material into a rented large-capacity transport An-124. It transported them on Friday to the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. The other two followed in a second flight that took place one to two days later. The first rotation of crews was provided by members of the 71st Mechanized Battalion in Borders, who flew to their vehicles in mid-March.

The BVP-2s provided protection for the Czech contingents at FOB Shank from insurgent rocket attacks. Once the enemy shelling started, the areas of enemy launches were immediately fired from infantry fighting vehicles, which, along with other measures, meant that Taliban "katyusha" were subsequently launched against FOB Shank from distances of around 7 km (from the original 1400-1700 m), which had a significant impact on their (in)accuracy.

At the turn of 2010 and 2011, the BVP-2s deployed in Afghanistan were replaced by KBVP M1 Pandur II CZ vehicles. After returning to the Czech Republic, these machines were stored in the Rančířov Supply Centre from the Repair Base structure.

The photos show all four BVP-2 infantry fighting vehicles from the Czech PRT contingent operating in Logar province captured during live fire at the FOB Altimur firing range, Logar province, Afghanistan, 30 September 2010.

BVP-2 alias BWP-2 and the Polish Army

The BVP-2s were purchased in 1989 in the Czechoslovakia in the number of 62 units. 60 machines were assigned to the 1st Mechanized Regiment in Wesole, belonging to the 1st Mechanized Division of the Warsaw Military District. 2 units were handed over to the training center of the 27th Mechanized Regiment in Branniewo. After five years of service they were scrapped in 1994 as unnecessary equipment and it was decided to sell them abroad. The funds were to be used to buy modern equipment for the Polish army. The BVP-2s were bought by Angola, but in the end only 42 were taken, so the remaining 20 vehicles were acquired by Togo in 1997. With the money raised, the Polish army received 112 Mercedes all-terrain vehicles, which can hardly be classified as modern equipment. The whole decision to scrap the BVP-2s was purely political, without the approval of the Minister of Defence, and was justified on the grounds that the USSR might exert pressure on the supply of spare parts and servicing. No one has questioned the fact that these vehicles are manufactured in Slovakia and there is no danger of such problems. Nor would there be any problem with the possible purchase of additional machines.

V průběhu léta 2020 probíhal s vozidly BVP-2 výcvik velitelů družstev a velitelů rojů, výcvik střelců operátorů a výcvik řidičů.

Proběhlo seřízení vstřikovacích čerpadel, výměna pojezdových a napínacích kol, pouzder vahadel, kolejových pásů a sestředění podvozku. Poté následovala technická údržba č. 2, což představovalo obměnu veškerých provozních kapalin, výměnu palivových filtrů, promazání podvozkové části, kontrolu skupin a podskupin motoru, převodovky, řízení, elektrické instalace, protipožárního systém, seřizovací práce apod.
