Despite the support of the Heeres Waffenamt and WaPrüf 6 of the Auto Union armored personnel carrier project known under the pseudonym Kätzchen, there was also an effort to use the Pz.Kpfw.38 (t) tank chassis and production capacity of BMM B.M.M. responded to the request for the development of a successor to the armored personnel carriers Sd.Kfz.251. promptly and presented a proposal for a modified design of a tank destroyer 7.5 cm PaK 40 auf Pz. Kpfw. 38 (t) "Marder III Ausf. M" in the form of an armored personnel carrier and an ammunition vehicle Munition- und Mannschaftsträger auf Fahrgestell 38 (t). An alternative design for a new armored personnel carrier could be the "Morserträger" project. The final decision was the order of September 6, 1943 for the development and construction of a pair of new prototypes (Kätzchen Versuchfahrzeuge).
The new design used components from the project of a new reconnaissance tank Pz.Kpfw.38 (t) neuer Art. An armored body opened from above was mounted on the chassis. The engine was in the rear right of the vehicle. Two types of power unit were considered (Tatra 103 diesel engine and Praga NR petrol engine). Both prototypes were to use a Praga-Wilson transmission. The armament was to consist of a pair of machine guns MG 42 in a similar arrangement as in Sd.Kfz.251.
In 3/1944, a 1: 1 scale wooden model was completed. The report of 15 July 1944 stated that the design work on the Kätzchen 38t project with the Praga NR engine was 65% completed and the work on the Kätzchen 38t project with the Tatra engine was 70% completed.
On September 9, 1944, a discussion took place with the participation of representatives of WaPrüf 6, B.M.M. and Auto Union. The discussion concerned the possible standardization of the chassis 38 (t) of B.M.M. and Auto Union's VKA. An interesting finding for Auto Union representatives was that the B.M.M. had officially changed the specification of the maximum speed to 50-52 km/h. Kätzchen from Auto Union had a specification set to reach a maximum speed of 60-65 km/h. The designers of Auto Union were not convinced that the 38 (t) chassis was suitable for achieving such speeds and the chassis had to be redesigned. Company B.M.M. began work on improving the chassis, which resembled a torsion suspension system. Even so, there was a fear that it would not be possible to reach a speed higher than 35 km/h. B.M.M. belts were also unsuitable. width 350 mm. Auto Union was to use 450 mm wide belts. However, reflections on the possible production of this new type of vehicle were thwarted by the critical situation of German industry. The intention to consolidate production has led to large orders for a reduced number of vehicle types. The production of vehicles of mass category 25 tonnes was to be canceled ( Pz.Kpfw.IV). Production was to produce universal platforms from the lightest 38 (t), respectively. modified 38 D, through the medium weight category represented by type Panther to the heavy weight category Tiger. Considerations of an armored transporter of similar construction to Kätzchen concerned the newly designed platform 38 D.
On November 16, 1944, it was decided to cancel plans for the production of reconnaissance vehicles on the 38 (t) platform. Maximum efforts have been focused on the production of tank destroyers Jagdpanzer 38 (t)
The Kätzchen 38t program therefore ended only in the form of drawing documentation and the position of a wooden model.
