Panzerbefehlswagen IV Ausf.J
On platforms of refurbished Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H was created in the period 3-7/1944 a total of 88 pieces of command modification. Another 17 pieces of command tanks were created as a conversion of new buildings from Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. Jin the period 8-9/1944.
They were produced in command versions:
Sd.Kfz. 267 - radio station Fu 5 and Fu 8 - for connection to ground units
SdKfz. 268 - radio station Fu 5 and Fu 7 - for connection with the air force.
The machines differed from standard tanks externally by only two antennas. By placing another radio station in the tank, the supply of ammunition for the cannon had to be reduced (from 87 to 72 rounds). The second radio was operated by a charger/radio operator. The machine was equipped as standard all Pz.Kpfw. IV, observation device SF 14 Z (artillery observation binocular extended from the command tower with the lid open). At the same time, the commander had at his disposal TSR 1 (retractable observation monocular - in this case extended from a position on the roof of the tower situated in front to the left of the command tower).
In recent years, rare photographs of command tanks with a frame antenna located above the engine cover behind the tower have appeared. It was probably a field modification.
To this day, one specimen Sd.Kfz has been preserved. 268, which is on display in the Royal Military Museum in Brussels. Chassis serial number KHY 90635, built in 9/1944.
