Breguet Bre.521 Bizerte

History:

In 1931, the French Navy purchased the S-8 Calcutta transport flying boat from Short. After successful trials, Breuget was commissioned to begin licensed series production, which consisted of four machines. The company then redesigned the aircraft and developed it into its own type. The new aircraft was significantly larger and had more powerful engines. Otherwise, it was also a flying boat of all-metal construction of the airframe, tail and nose surfaces. The type was adopted and built in two versions. For the civilian interested, the transport was the Bre.530 Saigon. Only two of these were eventually built, powered by three Hispano-Suiza 12Ybr engines and carrying 20 passengers.

For the Navy, the Bre.521 version was intended. The military prototype first flew on 11 September 1933 and was powered by a trio of Gnome-Rhone 14 Kdrs engines of 606 kW (825 hp) each. The aircraft had three open firing ports with Darne 7.5 mm (0.5 in) machine guns and a crew of eight men. Extensive trials followed and in April 1935 the machine was sent to Cherbourg's 1E2 Squadron for evaluation. As early as April 1934, three production machines were ordered. They were powered by three Gnome-Rhone 14 Kirs 1 engines of 662 kW (900 hp) each, and the number of gunports increased to four, with a gun turret at the stern. All crew compartments were covered. The main purpose of the deployment was long-range maritime reconnaissance.

The planes proved to be a success and more were ordered. One of them was built in the Bre.522 version. This aircraft was powered by Hispano-Suiza 14AA engines, also of 900 hp The last batch of three units, powered by Gnome-Rhone 14 N-1 engines of the same power, was delivered to the Navy in early 1940. In total, 32 examples were built over seven years of production.

The aircraft proved very successful and was used by 5 squadrons of the French Navy. After the outbreak of war, it carried out long-range reconnaissance over the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Twenty aircraft survived the Blitzkrieg, ten of which were used by 1E and 9E squadrons of the Vichy French Navy. After its occupation, they were seized by the Luftwaffe and added to the machines already in use. The Luftwaffe successfully used the type as a rescue from bases in the Orient and Saint Mandriere.

After the Allied invasion of southern France in August 1944, one airworthy Bre.521 was discovered by French soldiers and the aircraft was subsequently used by the 9FTr until the spares stock was exhausted.
