FBA Type a

In July 1913 he founded the trader with cars and aviation enthusiast Louis Schreck his own company, which proudly called the Franco-British Aviation Co., Ltd. That's because the main office was officially in London, although there is no production of had never been. Schreck to the company deposited various patents, which in the meantime nazbíral, as were those on a flying boat d'artois, who had previously built, and flying boats Tellier and Donnet-Lévêque. With the purchase of the latter company acquired the even smaller number of already-built machines Donnet-Lévêque Type a and Donnet-Lévêque Type C, which he then sold and a few of them, perhaps the FBA at its factory among Argenteuil and Bezons also built.

The end of the year 1913 on the basis of Schreck built the first machines of its own design. The first of these was a seaplane with the engine Gnome Omega about the performance of the 50 horses with the flat of the wings of 18.2 m2, and the second was a similar machine with an engine Gnome-about 70 horses and a flat of 20 m2, and the third a little bit bigger machine with the engine Gnome Lambda about 80 horses and a flat kříel 22,2 m2. This machine was exhibited at the paris Salon de l'Aéronautique, in December 1913. With the second machine crashed Great Britain André Beaumont, a naval officer and the former chief designer Donnet-Lévêqu, which Schreck hit prior to the purchase of the company. Beaumont machine show in Brighton, representatives of the british general staff, who had already bought one Donnet-Lévêque, and took it so much she ordered the Schreck now 40 machines. With the second prototype more, beaumont gets přodvedl also several of his most famous flights, as was the participation at the event in Paris-Boulogni and flew to the Deauville. All three machines have become the prototype of the first product of the company FBA označného just Type And. In addition to this designation were the first products of the company FBA known also as FBA-Lévêque, given their pedigree - but it complicates the situation for the aviation historians trying to find out, who from zahrančních users bought Donnet-Lévêquy from the FBA, who bought the FBA-Lévêque, and the like. James Davilla, in his book, talking about one and the same three planes once as a Donnet-Lévêque, once as FBA-Lévêque. The photos, which would be easily decided, unfortunately, are often not available.

Standard type And, as it was built in 1914, had the engine Lambda performance 80 horsepower, two-man crew and unarmed, and managed 90 km/h with endurance of three hours. In April 1914 was held the third edition of the Coupe d’hydravions in Monaco (cancelled due to weather) and also the second race for the Schneider cup, which was attended by Germany, France, Britain, Switzerland and the USA. In Switzerland participated in the Ernest Burri, seconded by the swiss aeroklubem and flying in FBA type And with engine Gnome Monosoupape 100 to. This machine is due to the engine sometimes considered to be the following FBA Type B, but he had the original tail surfaces of the "a's". Because of the French pilots was too much - to participate in may, only three machines in each country - was elimination round, from which the advanced Gabriel Espanet and Adrien Levasseur with the Nieuport VI, G and the Roland Garros with the Morane-Saulnier H. Both pilots on the Deperdussinech (including the previous winner, Maurice Prévosta) and the other Moran had bad luck. Against them boarded the British Howard Pixton and John the attractive original raj is Sopwithy Tabloid and Hellmuth Hirth with Albatrosem WE.1, which of course was lost after the accident at the Tamaris. 20. April, after the 100 km route, remained in the lead Pixtonův tabloid followed by Espanetem, Levasseurem and Burrim, but later both the French dropped out and the entire route of 150 miles (280 km) so have completed only Pixton with a time of 2 h 13 min and Burri with 3 h 24 min. Although FBA significantly slower than a Tabloid, observers were surprised that the flying boat ever to compete with the float machines, and soon emerged military supporters buying seaplanes with člunovým hull.

Forty pieces already ordered the FBA Type, And it was the Royal Naval Air Service passed in April 1914 (serial numbers 4-43). From the British received a number 3199-3208, 3637-3656 and 9601-9612. All of these machines were used to výviku and allocated were to 1. wing RNAS (first mentioned numbers plus perhaps two machines with numbers 3113 and 3114, about which no further information) - later served in the Dunkirk, and to bases in Calshotu, Dover, Killingholme, Felixstowe, Windermere and White City. According to some sources, these machines have engines with a capacity of 100 horsepower. After the outbreak of war in July 1914, the RNAS ordered the other 24 machines for patrolling in the vicinity of the ports, these machines but were delivered as Type B.

Three machines (serial numbers 44-46) supposedly (more on that later) ordered the Austro-Hungarian empire for the training of pilots. Delegation in Argenteuil but requested modifications - lengthening the fuselage for mounting the larger fuel tank and the range, amplification of the tail surfaces, and replacement of auxiliary floats with odélníkovým cross-section of the floats with the cross-section of the circular. Austria-Hungary had their FBA type And use it at the beginning of the war as a reconnaissance, with only one person on board due to an increase in endurance. Here but we're getting to it "allegedly". although French and british sources regularly repeat information about the purchase of the FBA type a And the Austrians, no list of machines to.in.to. Kriegsmarine are not. Perhaps it's the mystery machine A22, A23 and A24 (the three machines mentioned a few paragraphs above), which are usually referred to as customized Donnet-Lévêquy built a naval arsenal in Pula, about some of the other machines marked only as a "type of Donnet-Lévêque", which is in the lists appear and they are usually considered to be the next austrian copies, but which lacks any information. In any case, should be one of these mysterious austro-Hungarian FBA type And sold in 1916 to Sweden, in whose lists but, of course, also missing. The Danish navy apparently bought the machine no. 47 and 48, with the engines on the performance of 80 k, in the Danish sources - are missing.

André Beaumont, real name lieutenant Jean Louis Conneau, in April 1914 he retired from the navy, so he could fully dedicate to your work chief engineer at FBA. At the beginning of the war but he was forced to once again get to be the turnover of the navy assigned to the plant in the Argenteuil. This has happened to Schreck, was the ministry of war assigned to their own businesses. In anticipation of government orders Schreck registered trade mark of the FBA on the business of the court at Versailles (before it had only Louis Schreck, constructions aéronautiques) and later also established a second plant for the assembly of seaplanes in Vernon on the Seine, in the department of Eure. At the time I ordered around twenty pieces navy Italy (numbers 71-94) and Russia (95-105). At the same time Schreckovým employee became Ernest Burri, who was entrusted with the transport of Russian machines, and later also the training of Russian pilots. Russian FBA were transported disassembled by sea and immediately involved in the action. Italian pilots were trained directly in Argenteuil in flight school FBA, which probably alone owned several Type And (is placed perhaps six pieces, oddly enough, corresponding to the first prototype), and then themselves transported his equipment by rail to Italy. The deployment of the FBA type, And in both countries is not too much known, were quickly overshadowed by later versions, which were in Italy and Russia and built, probably, were in absolute majority only used for training.

The last user has paradoxically become France. The French navy is a very long time decided to purchase flying boats, gave the preference to the float planes. Yet in the end bought one the FBA type a, which was assigned to the Experimental and the receiving centre of naval aviation in Saint-Raphaël. The French pilots have criticized the flying boats as unstable, and especially mistrusted the lightweight construction of the ship hull, which was the only one standing between them and the restless surface of the water. Despite the fact eventually the French navy undertook in September 1914 order of 40 machines, but they were delivered as FBA Type B with dvojhlezdicovým engine of the Double Omega. towards the end of the year 1914 was built over 100 FBA Type a, the total is reported about 125 machines.
