Blinding agents (Blendmittel) were mainly intended to stop an advancing tank, against which other anti-tank assets designed for close combat could then be used more effectively. They could also be used against bunker pillboxes or other enclosed fortifications. In the German Army, the first model used was the Blendkörper BK 1 H, but this was replaced by the improved Blendkörper BK 2 H after 225,000 had been produced.
The body of the Blendkörper BK 1 H was made of glass and was pear-shaped. It was filled with a mixture of Titantetrachloride and Siliciumchloride with a total weight of 300 g, which reacted with air to produce a strong smoke when broken. The grenades were airtight sealed with a cardboard cap sealed with gypsum and were packed in separate cardboard boxes of one piece each.

The grenade was thrown to a distance of 30 m and the smoke developed from 10 to 20 seconds.
