This tank was a true Super Churchill and was known as such. It was developed as a result of time delays in the A30 Challenger project and as a temporary solution to the A41 Centurion project. The basis of this machine became the Churchill VII, armed with an effective seventeen-pounder, fitted with a larger turret and more robust armour.

The idea was not a new one; as early as 1943, experiments had been made in Tunisia to rearm Churchills. Their little effective 2 and 6 lb were replaced in field conditions with 75 mm guns from damaged Shermans. This experience resulted in the development of the last batch of Churchills which, with their 75 mm guns, joined the fighting at the end of the war. The modifications had a negative effect on the overall weight and the resulting low operational speed. Despite these shortcomings, six vehicles were produced and tested in May 1945, but this was too late for combat deployment. The machines were successfully tested, yet the order to begin production never came.

The low operational speed and the successful rearmament of the Shermans with seventeen-pounders condemned the Black Prince to the role of experiment. The tank was named after Edward, Prince of Wales, a figure known in British history as the Black Prince (reportedly from the colour of the armour he favoured). One piece is on display at Bovington Museum.

Black Prince - modifikace tanku Churchill VII s mnoha změnami - zvětšená věž, delší korba, silnější pancéřování 25 až 152 mm - a sedmnáctiliberním kanónem. Postaveno šest prototypů, testováno v květnu 1945. Poznatky ze zkoušek uplatněny při vývoji Centurionu.
