BT-1 (Christie M1930)

According to some authors, this was the name given to two Christie M1930 (M1931) prototypes without turrets, which were purchased with production documentation by the Soviet company Amtorg (represented by I.A. Chalepsky) for the sum of $160,000. The amount was not paid in full because of the missing turrets. The vehicles, cleared as agricultural tractors, were transported to the USSR in January 1931 by ship and transferred to the Kharkiv locomotive works ChPZ Im. Comintern - Factory 183. There, one was dismantled and the other (hull number No 2051) was subjected to tests on the Kubinka polygon from 14.03.1931 to 16.05.1931 and driving tests around the area from 17.05. to 13.06.1931.

During the tests, where 800kg weights were used instead of the turret, it was found that a two-man crew was able to enter the vehicle within 20 seconds through the opening instead of the turret (the driver's vision was too narrow). It was able to assemble and dismantle the tracks in 44 and 35 minutes respectively. The vehicle, weighing 9360 kg, was able to reach speeds of up to 70 km/h with the Liberty V12 engine. During the driving tests, with many failures (engine, chassis), 1000 km were driven, mostly on wheels.

In some literature we can also find the designation Original I and II. These vehicles served as a model for a number of BT light wheeled tanks.
Furthermore, a prototype of the so-called M1932 Flying Tank was to be delivered in 1932, but this deal fell through due to the American side.
