Major of Air Force Ondrej Ďumbala
Commander 1. Garrison Letka 13, commander of pilot retraining on Messerschmitt Bf 109, participant in the Slovak National Uprising, during which he served as deputy commander of the air group1. Czechoslovak Army. Universally recognized authority in the history of Slovak aviation.
Ondrej Ďumbala was born on 25 November 1912 in Hyba. In 1932, he began attending the Higher Industrial School of Mechanical Engineering in Košice. In 1934 he graduated from the Infantry Reserve Officers' School and in 1936 from the Military Academy in Hranice in Moravia. In early 1939, he qualified as a fighter pilot and served in the fighter Letka-37Letecký-pluk-3-smiseny" target="_blank">Letecký-pluk-3. After the establishment of the Slovak State (14 March 1939), he became the commander of the aforementioned Letky 37 of Perute IIILetecký regiment.
When Hungarian troops attacked the eastern Slovak border on 23.03.1939, the squadron under Ďumbal's command was immediately dispatched to the east. The next day, 24.03.1939, its machines landed Avia B-534 in the morning hours, at the Spišská Nová Ves airfield.
Ďumbala also took part in the attack on Poland in September 1939. Subsequently, he took command of Letka 13, which took part in fighter training at the Schlessheim - "A" Schule Klagenfurt flight school from 04.01.1940 to 01.03.1940.
In the rank of centurion, he also led Letka 13 during retraining for the Messerschmitt Bf 109 E at the Danish Karup-Grove airbase. The training was attended by 19 pilots and 87 ground personnel of the Slovak Air Force. The training took place from 25.02.1942 to 01.07.1942 (the date of the official end of the course) and the pilots flew in the Arado Ar 96 B (12 to 18 flights on average), Bf 109 B/D (9 to 15 flights), and finally Bf 109 E (9 to 15 flights). The pilots and their Bf 109 E aircraft were moved in stages with stopovers for refuelling. A flypast of 10 machines began on 2 July 1942 under the direction of German instructor Oblt. Reinwald and arrived at their destination at Airport Piešt'any on 3 July 1942. The pilots Stefan Martiš and Ďumbala were two days behind the group for technical reasons.
After arriving in Slovakia, the squadron continued to practice frontline operations, group flights and simulated combat.
In January 1943, the pilots were moved to Krasnodar airfield. It was in January 1943 that Dumbala shot down a Soviet fighter, according to German sources it was an I-16. In mid-February 1943, the squadron moved to Crimea, more specifically to Taman airfield. Here, the squadron re-equipped itself with the Bf 109 G "Gustav". In celebration of the 50th shoot-down (achieved by Jan Gerthofer on 21 March 1943), the Reich Marshal of the Luftwaffe Hermann Göring sent a letter to Ďumbal expressing his appreciation to the Slovak fighters.
On 1 April 1943, the Squadron moved to Anapa, where it was relieved by the 2nd Garrison. On this day, Ďumbala was promoted to Major of the Air Force. With the change of garrisons, Ďumbala was relieved by Air Force Captain Joseph Palenicek on 20 April. During his stay at the East Fort he made 14 combat sorties.
After his arrival from the East, Ďumbala was entrusted with various functions related to the training of Slovak pilots, ranging from commander of training on Bf 109 aircraft to commander of the Piešt'any airfield. In addition, he increased his own flying expertise on various types of aircraft.
Dumbala, however, was sympathetic to the anti-Fascist position and supported preparations for the uprising. During the uprising, he served as deputy commander of the Aerospace Group of the 1st Czechoslovak Army. From November 1944, he was active in the mountains, but due to failing health he had to hide in Liptovský Mikuláš. Here, too, he continued to support the rebel forces until his arrest by the Gestapo on 10 January 1945. After a series of interrogations, he was sent to an unknown location and was officially pronounced dead on 28 March 1945, with his place of death also unknown. However, it was most likely the Mauthausen concentration camp.
During his time on the Eastern Front, he made 14 combat sorties.
