FBA Type S

FBA Type S was the last prvoválečným seaplane built by Franco-British Aviation Co., and also the last, whose development participated in the André more, beaumont gets its name from Jean Conneau, a military pilot, air racer, designer and even wonderful figure of the beginnings of aviation. The cause of the emergence of a new flying boat were the specifications issued by the French naval air force, which required a new patrol and light bombing flying boat capable of long patrols over the open sea and using a new engine Hispano-Suiza 8 Bb with an output of 200 to. Georges Lévy joined the big trojplošníkem Lévy-Besson Alerté, Tellier suggested a twin-engine kanonový T. 5, and the most successful of the competitors FBA, Donnet-Denhaut, designed a machine generally known as DD.8 and the correct as the DD 200 ch biplace.

Schreck as a basis used the previous type H, with an enlarged wingspan, elongated hull for improved stability on the water and with a modified day due to the increase in the maximum speed on the surface above 150 km/h, and of course, the engine 8Bb with a square radiator. Because of a more powerful engine were also redesigned tail surfaces with greater articulation of the balanced rudder. The wing was also meant to fold. Defensive armament remained the same, one movable machine-gun in the front cockpit, bomb load, however, picked up on the two 77kg or 100kg bombs, or four 50kg. The crew also remained the same, ever was, however, present another mechanic. Later some machines were using the engine Hispano-Suiza 8 Dd with the power of 210 horses, and even Lorraine about 280 horses and four-bladed propellers. With him was able to reach up to 190 km/h.

The prototype first flew in July 1917 the Navy at the end he ordered 250 pieces, completed them but in the end it was less, with 180 machines deployed in the service before the conclusion of the truce. The first machines got into the service in November 1917 and served at bases on the Atlantic coast, the Mediterranean sea and the English channel. Given their destination was their service is mostly free of the bigger excitement. During anti-submarine patrols spent up to four hours over the sea, armed with bombs and allegedly sometimes even the 37mm cannon. If you ever have achieved some success, it is not known, but, equally, there was no type S shot down by the enemy. In the service of the bases in the Berre and Saint-Raphaël remained until 1923, when it replaced the flying boats Blanchard Brd.1 and Latham HB.3 and HB.5. Sometimes it is claimed that the type also served in Belgium and Yugoslavia, but this is probably a confusion with the previous type of H.

It is also worth mentioning two prototypes from the year 1918 that on the Type S are directly linked. The first of them was a machine with serial number 1222, which was adjusted to achieve the highest speed. The engine Hispano-Suiza on the performance of the 175 horsepower was therefore zakapotován, the depth of the wings was reduced by cutting 20 cm from each rib, the opposite was the increase of the area of the aileron. Šéfpilot company Ernest Burri quickly, but also dangerous looking machine refused to fly, and rightly so. During the first flight the machine was destroyed and perished also pilots Marie Amiot and Eiche. Another experimental machine got to change two rotary engines of unknown type, and this proved a dead end. And finally the last attempt to establish the type of S has become a large trans-oceanic flying boat, designed for the specifications of the navy from 1. January 1918. This machine should be able to patrol for eight hours, and had on board to carry the radio with a range of 300 km and four 120kg bombs. Schreck suggested an enlarged four-seat machine powered by a four-engine Hispano-Suiza 8A of the take-off weight of 2200 kg, at the time of the conclusion of the truce was but finished only three quarters of the way and work on it have been terminated. Franco-British Aviation after spent due to lack of orders year in total attenuation, only to end up back at least license the construction of Nieuportů the NiD.29 and their own successful range of light, we can say the Type S follow-up, seaplane FBA 17.
