Lieutenant Ján Režňák

In 1938, he participated in the military operation "1000 new pilots" focused on the training of new combat pilots for the Czechoslovak Air Force. He then studied at the pilot school in Spišská Nová Ves. After completing a fighter course, he was assigned to Squadron 13, with which he participated in the military campaign against the Soviet Union from July to August 15, 1941.

After the initial battles with the Soviets, the Slovak Air Force planned to modernize its armament, and so negotiations began with the German side on the retraining of our pilots in German technology and the purchase of fighter aircraft. As part of the retraining of Slovak pilots for German fighters Messerschmitt Bf 109 E from February to July 1942, he participated in training in the Danish Grove. After returning from Denmark, intensive training followed in Piešťany, and on October 27, 1942, the squadron began to move to the Eastern Front. Squadron 13 operated under the German JG 52.

Režňák achieved his first shot down on January 17, 1943, when he shot down a bi-plane I-153 in the Smolenskaya area. The last shot was reached on June 30, 1943. The squadron returned to Slovakia in July 1943, when it was replaced by the second set of Squadron 13.

After returning to Slovakia, Režňák served in the Emergency Squadron, with which he performed the territorial defense of Slovakia against Allied air raids. On April 25, 1944, he received the German award German Cross in Gold. He did not join the rebels during the SNP, as the Piešťany Airport was occupied by advancing Germans. In 1945 he was offered the opportunity to fight again against the Soviet Union, in the ranks of the German Air Force, but he refused. After the war, he continued to serve in the Czechoslovak Air Force. After 1948 and after the communists took power, he was released from the air force, in 1950 he was deprived of the rank of air force sergeant in reserve. A year later, he also lost a flight diploma, which meant a ban on flying and his work as a flight instructor. Until his retirement, he lived and worked in Piešťany, performing several jobs.

In 1997 he was extraordinarily promoted to the rank of lieutenant of the Air Force in reserve. He lived in Piešťany and died on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 in Martin.

Due to the fact that this gentleman was not in the rank of officer, he is decorated "only" with low degrees of honors of the Slovak state. But the complete medal for heroism, where the gold medal is very rarely awarded, shows the bravery and dexterity of the pilot. The award of the German Cross in Gold and the Honorary Air Cup clearly states that it was already selected for the award of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross in 1939. When assessing the orders and honors of a soldier, it is always necessary to take into account the rank achieved. In this case, he received everything he could.
