Stahlhelm M17
Helmet M17 "German type"
Stahlhelm M17 "Deutsche Art"

New battle tactics and high casualties forced the C.K. Army command to introduce the steel helmet for all units. In addition to the ongoing domestic production of Berndorfer helmets, huge quantities of M17 helmets were ordered from Germany. These supplies far exceeded domestic production - in 1917 it was 675,000 helmets and in 1918 even as many as 810,000 helmets.
The shape of the M17 helmet was based on the German M16 helmet, from which it differed mainly in the simpler attachment of the bib, which was fastened to loops riveted to the bell of the helmet. A typical feature of this helmet are the distinctive ventilation holes on the sides, which in shape resemble rolls - this gave the helmet the nickname "horn". In addition to the ventilation function, they also served to attach a special frontal armour - Stirnpanzer.
The lining of the helmet was leather, on a metal frame, attached to the helmet with three rivets.
The bib was initially leather, later replaced with canvas.
