History of the OT-62 TOPAS armoured personnel carrier

The impetus for the development of the OT-62 was given by the Commander of the Tank and Mechanized Troops, who in the spring of 1956 submitted to the Technical Administration of the General Staff/CSĽA preliminary technical and tactical requirements for a medium tracked, 12 t floating transporter for transporting mechanized infantry.

The requirements were consulted in writing with military and technical experts in the USSR in early 1957. On the basis of their comments, modified technical-tactical requirements were worked out in close cooperation with the specialist departments of our military academies, as well as other recommendations concerning the hull, water propulsion and means of communication. All the requirements and recommendations were handed over by the MNO, in agreement with the Ministry of General Engineering, to the Research and Development Centre of the J. V. Stalin in Martin. Two preliminary designs were drawn up in Turiec under the designation TOPAS 1 with two engines and TOPAS 2 with one engine. TOPAS 2 was selected by the management of the resort. The latter, after completion in the summer of 1958, was consulted by the experts of the Stalingrad plant in the USSR, who, due to the excessive complexity of the Czechoslovak design, recommended to focus the development on the modernization of the Soviet BTR-50PA tracked transporter. The above solution was approved by the Czechoslovak side in September 1958. At the same time, the Soviet side requested licensing documentation for the BTR-50PA and, to speed up the development work, the delivery of 3 sample BTR-50PA vehicles. The delivery of the licensing documentation as well as the three sample vehicles could not be secured within the necessary deadlines. These facts, on the one hand, caused the extension of the development work by about 5 months, but, on the other hand, made possible its modernisation, which included major design changes compared to the original BTR-50PA layout. The original engine was redesigned as a turbocharged engine. The original transmission was replaced by a five-speed gearbox and a combined directional gear train. New torsion bars and drive wheel were used in the undercarriage. The hull of the transporter itself also underwent partial modifications. In addition to the commander's turret, a gunner's turret with mounts for the vz. 59 and a T21 tracer. Two prototypes were built between October 1959 and the summer of 1960. These underwent combined company and inspection trials in the autumn of 1960.

These were immediately followed by military trials, which were divided into two stages. In the first stage, the design of the vehicles was verified in terms of technical characteristics and military use. In the second stage, the TOPAS prototypes were tested in the framework of tactical exercises of the 1st Panzer Division. A great emphasis was placed on sea trials. They demonstrated the vehicles' navigational stability and smoothness of their sailing even when loaded with an 85 mm gun vz.52 or a vehicle GAZ-69. Beyond the tactical exercises, additional tests were carried out. During them, the possibilities of using OT - TOPAS for transporting 82 mm BzK vz. 59 and 120 mm mortar vz.42N with firing diameter and operator. Furthermore, the possibility of transporting two mortars vz. 52, including ammunition, even firing the aforementioned mortar while driving. The results of these tests were good, although the OT TOPAS was not designed for such use.

Based on the positive results of the military and supplementary tests, the OT-TOPAS was introduced into the armament of the CSRL in November 1962 under the designation OT-62. Serial production in 1963-1968 was provided by PPS Detva. A total of 890 OT-62s were produced for the needs of the CSFA by 1968. They formed the basis of the motorized artillery regiments of the tank divisions.

At the end of the 1970s, their gradual withdrawal from the first bundles began. After repairs, the vehicles were stored in untouchable stockpiles.

From the end of 1990, the military repair plants in Sternberg and Presov started to gradually liquidate them. After 1993, part of the OT-62 was taken over by the Army of the Slovak Republic. On the basis of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, their liquidation continued until
until 1994, when the last OT-62 was dismantled.

Rare use of the three-tone masking coating of the OT-62 armored personnel carrier. The composition of the camouflage colors used is close to the autumn scheme: yellow earthy - brown earthy - red brick.
The colors used adapted to the season: spring, summer, autumn and naturally winter. Their distribution, shape of fields, refraction, ratio of colored fields, etc. were governed by special military regulations on camouflage techniques using distorting colors.

OT-62 and Yugoslavia

In 1965, Yugoslavia purchased two OT-62 TOPAS testing. Although the command of the army was very satisfied with his performances, to the next purchase has not occurred, for you already ran the production of custom armored transporter M-60, which was emphasized by the yugoslav government. Both delivered the OT-62 were used in the training center armored vehicles in Banja Luka.

OT-62 and the Ludowe Wojsko Polskie

OT-62 were in Poland included only in a single department and it in 7. lusatian landing division from the Danzig, which was a bundle of the marine corps. The first 64 pieces of the OT-62 was delivered in late January and early February 1965. 7. lužická airborne division was among others composed of the following departments:

4. "Pomorskim" paratroop regiment of the Leborku
34. "Budziszynskim" paratroop regiment from Słupsk
35. a paratroop regiment from Gdańsk Wrzeszcza
58. ženijním the banner of Leborku

These departments received a total of 138 pieces TOPASů, which were from the CSSR delivered without armament and the Polish party is vyzbojila alone. Such modified machines on the number of 116 pieces carry the TOPAS-2AP. A further 22 vehicles were delivered in the connection version of TOPAS R-2 and R-3. Variant of the TOPAS R-2 for the company commander carrying two radios R-105 and one R-112. TOPAS R-3 with two radio sets R-105once R-112 and once R-311 was designed for connection to the degree of the regiment - the division.

Later, it was a smaller amount of versions TOPAS-2AP converted into a wrecker TOPAS-WPT. This OT-62 was equipped with a winch with a thrust of 2.5 tons with a length of rope 600 feet used for pulling vehicles from the water, or to their campaign whether or not the water surface. Furthermore, he received a claw machine with a load capacity of one ton, trays for tools and spare parts, welding kit, and a pontoon for the frog man.

During the riots in Gdansk in 1970 were lost two cars that failed to fix it and so ended up as a training tool for firefighters on a combat car. OT-62 were used until 1994, when they were all about the number of 95 pieces discarded.

Between 1968 and 1969, Czechoslovak companies concluded contracts with Iraq worth USD 70 million (then CZK 1.9 billion). Part of these contracts was the delivery of 375 OT-62 transporters. In the 1970s, another 445 TOPAS were to be delivered to Iraq.

One of them was the machine in the photos below, which in early July 2004 served American firefighters (from the Marine Wing Support Squadron 273 of the US Marine Corps) from the air base Al Asad in Iraq as a fire simulator.

Diskuse

TOPAS (sometimes also referred to as Transpotér Armored Belt) was in the era OT-64 CATTLE classified as a rule, to the assembly of the tank battalions of tank divisions respectively, with the motorized rifle rot of these battalions (all the tech on tracks with the exception of the OT-65 FUG in the reconnaissance company). Next I got the impression that was the anti-tank battery (on the engine compartment composed of such two ramps, after which it squeeze out BzK. I'm not sure how much then was the BzK mounted on the cover motoráku, but certainly it gave the lead barrage (well truth be told, for the driving I guess not...).
TOPAS was from the point of view of other drivers is quite an interesting feature - the put to turn "on the spot" - not to spin around the center zabržděného belt like T-55 or T-72, but the belts could run against each other - it happened in the neutral position and if the machine stood in the garage or under the "ace" and the driver on it in a hurry I forgot and one whippets gave the way forward and the other backward (or just in the "driver's license" bad zamlel, ..... I had on a Saturday or Sunday job taken care of... Rolling Eyes.

I have one question about the OT-62 units...
Where did they get the OT-mounted tarmacs and how many of them were in the company? Was it a tarasnica of the tarasnica squad (and then what happened to it?) or was it a different weapon and the tarasnica squad was retained?
