Supermarine Scapa
After experience with the construction of three-engine flying boats (Nanuk - Solent - Southampton X), Chief Designer R. J. Mitchell came to the conclusion that in terms of the ratio of performance and hydro- and aerodynamic properties, the most suitable form of flying boats is a twin-engine concept. The prototype Southampton IV emerged from the work on it. Its fuselage was subjected to careful tests to optimize its properties both when moving on the water surface and in flight. After the adoption of the 19/33 specification, it went into production under the new designation Supermarine Type 221 and codenamed Scapa. The aircraft was designed for remote sensing (general reconnaissance).

The fuselage was of all-metal construction. The wings and tail surfaces had a metal construction with a canvas cover and a protective coating. In the period 1934-36, a prototype was followed by 14 more serial aircraft. Production was then stopped in favor of his successor - type 230 - Supermarine Stranraer. Manufactured Scapa aircraft served at Sq. Nos. 202, 204, 228 and 240 until 1938, when they were obsolete. 3 pieces also served in training units, where they lasted until August 1940. Probably during the war they did not take off.

The engines driving the double-bladed propellers were suspended under the upper wing, accessed by a ladder leading from the back of the fuselage to the centerplane of the upper wing. The crew consisted of 5 pilots - 2 pilots in a covered cabin with seats next to each other, 3 shooters, laid out on the model of the previous Southampton, one on the bow, the back of the fuselage and tail. It was also possible to use an additional chassis for easier handling on the ground.

Made a total of 1 prototype and 14 serial pieces.
