Supermarine Spitfire HF Mk.VII

Type 351

Brief History

According to the original plans of the designers of the Supermarine factory, the Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 engine with a two-stage and two-speed compressor should use a high-altitude Spitfire HF Mk.VII, medium heights should be controlled by Spitfire Mk.VIII. These aircraft were designed from the beginning for this series of engines, but their development took a long time and so with this Merlin took off a makeshift modified Spitfire Mk.VC newly designated as Spitfire Mk.IX. Two months after the inclusion of the "nines" into service, the first high-altitude Spitfire Mk.VII was completed.

The high-altitude version of the Spitfire Mk.VII was equipped with a pressurized heated cabin, the fuselage was strengthened compared to the Mk.V version and was directly optimized for powerful Merlin 61. In the newly designed wings found space for two self-locking two fuel tanks with a volume of 63 liters. The hull tanks were redesigned and now held up to 436 liters of fuel. The cover of the pressurized cabin could be removed during takeoff and landing (for the altitude version Mk.VI this was not possible). The first series of "sevens" were delivered with extended wingtips, later aircraft were delivered with a "normal" wingspan. Wings with pointed ends and a larger span increased the rate of fall and reduced the agility of the aircraft at lower and medium altitudes. All aircraft carried Mk.VII had a retractable spur wheel.
Spitfires version Mk.XI also proved to be capable of high-altitude fighters and so the combat squadrons were no longer interested in specialized high-altitude machines. The production of "sevens" was terminated in early 1944 after the completion of 141 aircraft.

Author's note: Please do not confuse this high-altitude fighter with a tactical reconnaissance Spitfire PR Mk.VII. The reconnaissance aircraft was designed for operations at low altitudes and it was a redesignated version of the Spitfire PR Type G, which had the closest Spitfire Mk.VA. This re-designation from 1941 brought even more confusion to the already chaotic labeling of Spitfires and Seafires.
