Despite almost negligible experience with the production of tank equipment in Australia, an interesting tank construction was created during World War II.
The "Sentinel" program was established in 1940 due to concerns about possible isolation after the possible occupation of Great Britain, respectively. successful blockade of the Japanese navy and the subsequent loss of technological background of advanced tank countries. In an effort to develop as quickly as possible, the Australian designers used proven aggregates of other vehicles. Specifically, it was the use of the chassis of the American medium tank M3 Lee .

AC 1
The build of the prototype extended to 1/1942. The army ordered 66 pieces of this type. They were manufactured from 8/1942 to? / 1943. However, the machines came to the units at a time when they were already armed with American and English tanks. Sentinel AC 1 therefore served exclusively in training units.

AC 2
I don't know anything about this type. The design study remained only on paper.

AC 3
The armament instead of a cannon from AC.I consisted of a 25 pound howitzer (caliber 83.5 mm). The prototype was tested in 1943. It was not accepted into series production.

AC 4
The machine was equipped with an excellent 17 pound cannon (caliber 76.2 mm). One prototype was created. Serial production has not started.

In addition, a machine with two 25 pound howitzers mounted side by side and a machine with torsion bars were tested.

Since 1940, Australia has been developing its own medium tank project based on the adapted chassis of the American M3 tank. Tests and designs of several variants eventually resulted in the August 1941 model AC I with a cast hull and turret, armed with a two-pound British cannon. The original was especially the power unit - three coupled forked eight-cylinder with a total content of 5719 cm3 and a power of 117 horsepower. The crew of the tank weighing 28 and a half tons consisted of five men. A total of 66 pieces of this variant were produced in 1942, but the machine, named Sentinel, was used in the Australian Army only for training. Other variants of the Sentinel brought with them changes mainly in armament: type AC III had a two-pound cannon replaced by a twenty-five-pound howitzer, and there was a prototype armed with two howitzers in the tower next to each other. The AC IV version was converted to a seventeen-pound cannon. Also, these variants did not exceed the prototype stage.

I would like to add that either Sattinel tanks were originally intended as propulsion units for either Pratt & Whitney Wasp petrol or diesel Guiberson T-1020 . However, the production of these engines in Australia proved to be unrealistic, so an emergency solution in the form of three coupled Cadillac V8 car engines came to the fore. But the solution was not ideal, as the engines overheated considerably. And so, in connection with the development of later versions, a new unit with a volume of 17.1 l called "Perrier-Cadillac" is created with these three engines. It was a very similar solution to the American engine Chrysler A57 . In addition to solving engine problems, the AC 3 and AC 4 versions have also modified the electric tower rotation mechanism.
In 1943, several tanks were modified into German tanks, used to shoot the film 'The Rats of Tobruk'. It is a little funny that it was the greatest combat experience of Sentinel tanks.
Surviving tanks are housed in the RAAC Puckapunyal Victoria Tank Museum (serial number 8030) and the Bovington Tank Museum (serial number 8049). The only completed prototype AC 3 (serial number 8066) is housed in the Treloar Technology Center at the Australian Military Museum in Canberra. Finally, another copy is owned by a private person in the state of Victoria.
