Lieutenant Colonel v.v. Pukančík Pavel

Pavel Pukančík was born on 20 January 1920 in Pezinok. Here he graduated from a burgher school and, since he wanted to study forestry, he had to undertake a compulsory three-year forestry apprenticeship before being admitted to the forestry school. After one of the confrontations with his superior, who became an active Nazi in 1939, he decided to leave together with Adolf Ragas for France, where the Czechoslovak foreign army was being organized. On 30 April 1940, they crossed the nearby Hungarian border together and crossed through Senec and Nové Zámky to Budapest, where they left with the help of the French consulate for Yugoslavia.

On 1 June 1940, they both arrived in Marseille and from there their journey led to the Czechoslovak Replacement and Training Unit camp at Agde. As early as 4 June 1940, Pavol Pukancik had already signed up for the air force at his presentation. However, the surrender of France soon came and most of the members of the Czechoslovak air group evacuated from Port Vedres to Britain. Among them was Pavol Pukančík. On board the Appapa he met another aviator, the Modran Imrich Kormanovich, with whom he shared a common fate until Imrich's death on 3 March 1942. On 24 July 1940, Pukančík was accepted into the Royal Air Force (henceforth RAF) with the rank of Aircraftman 2nd Class and became one of the founding members of 312. On 24 January 1941, he was promoted to the rank of Aircraftman 1-st Class and on 18 July 1941, he was transferred to the West Freugh Bombardment and Gunnery Flying School, where he was promoted to the rank of Leading Aircraftman during his studies.

After completing his training, he was promoted to Sergeant on 16 August 1941 and transferred to the [url=/topic/view/77]311th Czechoslovak Bombardment Squadron
. He made his first combat flight on 22 February 1942, as a crew member of Wellington Mk.IC DV516 "KX-K" of Franz Taiber, which was to bomb the harbour of Wilhelmshaven and the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau moored there. This was followed by raids on Paris, Le Havre, Duisburg, Essen and other cities. In late April 1942, the entire 311th Bombardment Squadron was transferred from Bomber Command to Coastal Command. After a short training period, the unit moved to Talbenny Base. However, the first combat operation at this base was not an anti-submarine patrol, but a raid on Bremen, in which about 1,000 aircraft took part. During this action, a machine under the command of Josef Stránský was hit by anti-aircraft fire in the right engine, which caught fire. However, the pilot extinguished the fire with a steep flight and returned to base on 27 June with the crew unharmed. During one of the anti-submarine patrols on 27 July, Josef Stránský's crew, of which Pavel Pukančík was a member, managed to severely damage a German submarine, U-106, Type IXB, in the Atlantic. For this action Pavel Pukancik received the first Czechoslovak War Cross 1939 and on 19 December 1942 the second Czechoslovak War Cross for 13 successful operational flights in the Atlantic.

During his 33rd operational flight on 23 November 1942, František Radina's Wellington, in which Pukančík was also flying, was attacked by a quartet of long-range Junkers Ju 88C fighters, and to his credit, he managed to repel the enemy attack, even damaging three German machines and shooting down one (shot down by Pukančík himself). On 29 April 1943, Pavel Pukančík completed his 55th operational flight and was given a leave of absence. After jumping it, he reported to the 1487th Tow Target Squadron (the unit was intended to tow sleeve targets for fighter sharp-shooting practice). Here he remained for six months. In August 1943 he married Margaret Parsley at Barnstaple (County Devon) and a year later they had a daughter, Jana Margaret. However, this marriage did not have a happy ending. Margaret did not want to move to the Czechoslovakia after the end of the war and Pavel did not want to stay in Britain. At Margaret's request, the marriage was dissolved on 13 September 1951.

During his six months of flying with the 1487th Tractor Target Squadron, Pukancik flew a total of 74 sorties lasting 93 hours and 15 minutes (over 670 hours in total). On 20 March 1943, he was transferred to the Czechoslovak Depot at St. Athan Base, where he served as Executive Staff Sergeant. On 1 March 1944, he was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer and subsequently completed his training as a radiotelegraph operator. On 28 April 1945, Pavel Pukancik was reassigned to the 311th Czechoslovak Bombardment Squadron. Here he completed his last, 56th operational flight. He was demobilized on 15 August 1945 and returned to Czechoslovakia on 15 January 1946.

On 12 March 1946, he was finally released from active military service and returned to Pezinok, where he was employed as a technician on 1 June 1946. At the insistence of his wife, he returned briefly to England, but did not stay there long and returned home for good. As a resistance fighter, the National Committee assigned him a trade and a property - an inn and a house on Štefánikova Street. On 14 February, however, at the request of the District Trade Union Council, his trade was revoked and the inn taken away. Another shock came on 28 June 1949, when his military rank was withdrawn by decree of the Ministry of Defence. Further blows of fate came in 1955. He was accused of economic espionage for the CIA on a nonsensical charge, and on April 6, 1956, the Supreme Court in Prague confirmed his sentence: 12 years of forced labor in the Jáchymov uranium mines at the Bytíz Correctional Institute. On 9 September 1960, the remainder of his sentence was remitted by presidential amnesty. However, the peripeteia did not end there. He moved from one job to another. Nevertheless, he did not resign. He made several requests for an inquiry into his sentence. However, he did not receive real rehabilitation until after November 1989. He was promoted to retired lieutenant colonel and was awarded the Order of Milan Rastislav Štefánik III Class. He died on 9 March 1992 in Bratislava.
