Major General v.v. Pavel Kocfelda
Pavel Kocfelda was born 29.6.1917 in Horní Suchá. He was trained as a mechanical engineer. He started to fly sport and completed a radiotelegraphy course. He was trained as part of the 1000 Pilots of the Republic event. Later he flew for the Bata Company. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia he left for Poland on 14.6.1939, from where after a short stay he reached France by Polish ship. In Adge he refused to sign a commitment to the Foreign Legion, so he was expelled from the aviation group (see source 2). He started work in a factory making gas masks.
In June 1940 he sailed by boat to Britain and joined the RAF, where he received the number 787 471. He served as a ferry pilot with 1. Delivery Flight, later with 313 Squadron (6 January 1942-15 April 1943) with the rank of Sgt. and F/Sgt. From 15.6.1943 to 1.2.1944 he flew with 312th Squadron in the ranks of F/Sgt. and P/O. From January 1942 to the end of 1943 he flew 260 hours and 20 minutes (191 operational sorties). From the UK he went with other pilots to the USSR, where the 128th Czechoslovak Independent Fighter Squadron, later the 1st Czechoslovak Independent Fighter Aviation Regiment, was being formed. Together with it he reached Slovakia during the Slovak National Uprising (SNP), where he flew 47 operational sorties in a total time of 30 hours 10 minutes (from 17 September 1944 to 25 October 1944) and shot down ½ Junkers Ju-87 and one Messerschmitt Bf-109G. After the suppression of the uprising, he flew with the rest of the unit to Romania. From December 1944 until the end of the war, he served as an instructor in the 2nd Czechoslovak Fighter Aviation Regiment.
After the end of the war, he became an instructor at the Prostějov Air Training School and at the Olomouc School for Teachers of Flying. In January 1946 he became a pilot in the nationalised Bata company. He was later reactivated and returned to the army. In 1948-1949 he was enrolled in the squadron commanders' school and served with the 3rd Air Division in Brno on the Avia S-199. He trained Israeli pilots as part of the "Haganah" action. He was banned from flying in 1950 and was reassigned to silent service. He took up flying only in 1955 at the Prostejov apprenticeship (1st lšp). When the unit was relocated to Prešov on 31.8.1959 he commanded the school regiment. Conditionally he was still flying into the 1960s.
Because of the deep wrinkles on his face, he was nicknamed "Scratchy". In May 1990 he was promoted to the rank of major general v.v. He died on 6.10.1992 in Prague. His urn with his ashes is located at the Brevnov Cemetery in Prague 6.
