At the beginning of the heavy self-propelled antiaircraft tank project was an order from the German Army for three 8.8cm Flak L/56 self-propelled guns laden on the Pz.Sfl.IVc platform developed by Krupp. These were to be used to destroy the heavy fortifications of the Maginot Line during the planned attack on France. The position of these machines missed the occupation of France and consequently their role was reclassified as tank fighters. However, due to their light armour, this was not an appropriate designation. They would have been easy prey when encountering enemy tanks.
In 7/1942 the construction of two machines using this chassis was ordered. The armoured gun was to be the 8.8 cm Flak 41 L/71 anti-aircraft gun. Anticipated delivery of the prototypes was in 4-5/1943.
The original SMG 90 gearbox and steering gear did not perform well, and it was proposed to Krupp to replace them with a ZF SSG 76 gearbox and steering gear from Krupp.
The first prototype was produced at the Essen plant, but after the factory was bombed it was moved to Magdeburg in 10/1943. Here it was completed in early 11/1943. On 5/11/1943 it was decided that another prototype was not needed and therefore the work-in-progress parts ended up in the scrap yard.
In the front of the vehicle sat the driver and the radio operator. Behind their back was a 8.8 cm Flak 41. The platform was protected by high armored sidewalls, which swung out to the sides when in standby position. Thus, it was possible to achieve a 360° measurement. The weapon's aim ranged from -5° to +90°. The ammunition supply was 36 rounds. Secondary armament was to be MP 38, or MG 34 submachine guns.
In 1/1944, the order for the development of this machine was suspended by Reich Minister Albert Speer. Priority was to be given to more necessary combat machines. Another fact that relegated this project to the position of not acutely needed was actually the method of deploying such a gun. In principle, (static) anti-aircraft guns were controlled by a more complex system of detection and guidance by means of detection devices, which was not possible in the case of mobile flak. Somehow it was not thought out how commands would be transmitted from the control station to the individual guns. In the case of a static battery, commands were transmitted by cables, and this was not possible in the case of the mobile Flaks which were to accompany the mobile units.
After replacing the original SSG 90 gearbox with a ZF SSG 76, the prototype was moved to Oxbol in Norway for driving and firing tests. The tests took place between 3-9 March 1944. In 3/1944 a modification was ordered consisting of replacing the 8.8 cm Flak 41 gun with an older 8.8 cm Flak 37 gun. In this form, the prototype underwent field trials as part of the Heeres Flakartillerie Abteilung (Sf.) 304, a unit included in the 26th Panzer-Division. The unit was deployed in Italy.

The project of a heavy self-propelled anti-tank tank with 8.8 cm Flak continued further in the form of the VFW II.
