KRTP-81 = complete radio survey vz. 81, code name for Ramona

The passive radio searcher KRTP-81 Ramona ( NATO code Soft Ball) was developed at Tesla in Pardubice and CSLA military research institutes.

Using triangulation targeting ( 3 Ramona stations are needed to target the target), it allows you to target up to 20 air targets at the same time. The radar works with frequencies of 1-8 Ghz, while its main function is to eavesdrop on signals emitted by air targets and their subsequent targeting. The advantage of this tracking system is the absolute concealment of the radar from the enemy ( the radar does not emit any detectable radiation. Unfortunately, it cannot be used to aim and guide air-to-air missiles).

The system itself proved to be quite successful in operation, but it was still quite imperfect and inaccurate, and the practical complexity was bothered by the excessive complexity and length of assembly. Therefore, a better and more mobile system KRTP-86 Tamara (NATO code Trash Can) was developed.

Ramona was the first searcher to be able to automatically (without operator intervention) introduce the detected target into the IFF/SIF transponder tracking mode thanks to software developed by J. Louda. Later, the program was improved so that it was able to automatically load any type of detected target into the tracking mode.
Like its predecessor Kopáč and its successor Tamara and Věra used the method of time-hyperbolic targeting, which differs from other, foreign searchers, which they use the maximum targeting method.

Ramona was subsequently modernized and designated Ramona-M.
The difference was:
new antenna system and receivers = higher sensitivity (by 3dB) and higher resistance to interference
improved survey results according to the TACAN questionnaire
more powerful software (better performance for new types of aircraft)

Several pieces were delivered to Syria in the 1980s.

This is the top of the KRTP-81 Ramon searcher mast. After assembling the ball and drilling six anchors, the mast consisted of honeycomb parts up to a height of 25 m using a hydraulic platform. A small elevator for the operator was hung on the mast.

Photo of the whole mast "right side", built at the Havran station near Tachov in 1985.

For those who do not know Cyrillic - the text in the photo deals with fire prevention measures for the operation of the S 25 M-P tower. (buko1)

A bit of provocative photos of Ramona (taken from the server www.vrtulnik.cz) taken during the so-called Redcatchers missions. Both shots are taken on the Havran hill, where there was a tower used for reconnaissance and intelligence service.

Diskuse

I would add a small bead to Ramona. Although it is a Czech product, all the labels were written in Cyrillic: cry: The battalion commander, Captain Š ....., whose favorite saying was "if there is no war within five years, then I was born unnecessarily", he was heard, "the platoon of machine gunners is nicer to me than the battalion with Ramona ..." (Tachov 1983-1985)
