T30

Ordnance Committee Minutes 25117 of 14 September 1944 commissioned the development of four prototypes of heavy tanks in two pieces in two series. Two were to be armed with a 105 mm cannon type T5E1 referred to as T29 and the other two were to receive a 155 mm cannon T7 under the designation T30. Originally, they were to be identical tanks with different cannon armaments. In the spring of 1945, however, the engine was replaced by an air-cooled type Continental AV-1790-3, which had an output of 810 hp at 2800 rpm. These engines, together with the CD-850-x gearbox, became the basis for the propulsion of American tanks for the next 20 years. The installation of such a drive required a change in the cooling air supply.

The T30s were available at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland shortly after the first T29 tests. The first arrived at the end of May, the second in June.
The barrel of the T7 cannon was L/40 long (6197 mm) and weighed 2,383.6 kg. The ammunition was divided, the HE grenade weighed 43 kg and the powder cartridge 61 kg. The muzzle velocity of the charge was 717 m/s. Charging was facilitated by a semi-automatic spring feeder.

On June 24, 1947, an automatic charging system was installed in one of the prototypes. This charging system was relatively complex, consisting of an automatic balancer to a horizontal position and returning to the original position of the elevator, a feeder, a charging device and an automatic cartridge ejector. This modernized tank was designated T30E1. During this modernization, the cannon received a new bed T 124E1. Visually, the tank differs only in the opening in the tower for ejecting cartridges and also in the raised hatch on the command dome.

The T30 prototype is now in the Patton Museum depository in Fort Knox, Kentucky.
