As of 2012, the Italian Air Force refers to them as A-11A Ghibli (single-seat AMX) and TA-11A (two-seat AMX-T), the aircraft after the ACOL A-11B[/baa] and TA-11B upgrades, respectively.


In 2005, a modernization program for AMX called ACOL (Aggiornamento Capacità Operative e Logistiche) began, aimed at increasing operational capabilities and streamlining logistics and maintenance of the machines.


The upgraded machines received new avionics from Selex ES (tactical computer, 3 multi-function displays (MFD), cockpit compatible with night vision goggles (NVG), new integrated GPS/INS, communication systems, new IFF, emergency data recorder, self-protection system, datalink and other equipment.


The integration of Rafael's RecceLite reconnaissance containers and JDAM precision anti-surface munitions (454 kg GBU-32) has taken place.


The prototype of the modernization was flown on 30.09.2005 in Turin, the first serial modernized machine on 17.10.2006. The Italian Air Force modernized 42 A-11As and 10 TA-11As (12 according to other sources). The upgraded machines are expected to be in service until at least 2018.



Modernization of the Brazilian A-1A and A-1B began in 2007 with the delivery of three machines to Embraer. They were to serve as prototypes for the upgrades. The upgrades were coordinated with upgrades to the Brazilian A-29 Super Tucano and F-5M Tiger II.


Avionics equipment is based on Elbit systems. The contract for the upgrade of 43 machines was signed in January 2011. The upgraded machines were designated A-1M.


The new Israeli tactical computer works with the upgraded SCP-01 radar. Information from the radar and other sensors and flight data is displayed on three color MFDs. The upgraded HUD as well as the cockpit lighting is NVG compatible. Also integrated were the Israeli DASH IV helmet-mounted imaging and targeting system,FLIR electro-optical reconnaissance and targeting system, Thales TSC 2030 and TSC 2050 IFF transponders, self-protection systems, and the Brazilian national BR2 datalink is expected to be added in 2016.


The armament has been expanded to include the indigenous MAR-1 anti-surface/anti-radiation cruise missile, the Brazilian conventional bômb conversion system Mk.82 and Mk.83 - SMKB (Smart MK Bomb) Acaucan. The integration of the short-range PLRS A-Darter, developed in cooperation between Brazil and South Africa, is being prepared for the near future.


The first flight of the upgraded A-1M took place on 19.06.2012. The service life of the upgraded aircraft is expected to be extended at least until 2025.
