Regiment history

The history of the 4th Fighter Air Regiment (4th IAP) began to be written on April 21, 1938 in the city Bobrujsk. On this day, within the Belarusian Special Military District, the 4th IAP was officially established, consisting of four squadrons and armed with fighter jets Polikarpov I-16. His superior was 56. fighter air brigade of the Air Force of the Belarusian Special Military District. Nine months after its inception, in January 1939, one of the squadrons was rearmed to fighters of the type Polikarpov I-16 type 17, another squadron received agile biplanes Polikarpov I-15bis. With such armaments, the regiment of the 56th Fighter Air Brigade of the 4th Army of the Belarusian Front took part in the invasion of Poland from September 17, 1939 to September 28, 1939, which most contemporary Russian historians euphemistically refer to as the "liberation of West Belarus." However, it was a simple occupation of another country.

After this first combat experience, the regiment was reformed in December 1939. He was left with two of the original squadrons and added one squadron of 20. Fighter Air Regiment and 35. fighter air regiment. He had only fighter biplanes in his arsenal Polikarpov I-153 and Polikarpov I-15bis. At the same time, he changed the base and was transferred from his native Bobrujsk to the unspecified airport of the Petrozavodsk direction. As of February 18, 1940, he had 64 pilots in the combat formation, 18 fighters of the type Polikarpov I-153 and 46 types I-15bis, with which he participated in the Finnish War from 07.01.1940 - 13.03.1940. He was incorporated into the Air Force of the 8th Army of the Northwest Front.

After the end of the fighting, in which he lost one pilot and depreciated as destroyed five aircraft, the regiment returned to the base in Bobrujsk on March 20, 1940. Two months later, in May 1940, the 4th IAP was transferred to Perelety Airport and incorporated into the Odessa Military District as a separate fighter air regiment. As of June 1, 1940, he was subordinated to the 13th Air Brigade of the Odessa Military District at Banta Airport. From June 28, 1940 to July 9, 1940, the regiment participated in another raid by another country. In the composition of the 1st Air Brigade of the 9th Air Force of the Southern Front, he supported the violent occupation of Romanian Bessarabia.

In less than a year, however, the situation changed dramatically and the aggressor became a victim. On Sunday, June 22, 1941, the pilots took off on the machines MiG-3, I-16 and I-153 in defense of the southern borders of the Soviet Union, which was attacked by troops of the Hitler coalition. The regiment was at that time part of the 20th Mixed Air Division of the Odessa Military District and had a total of 60 modern MiGs (of which 7 in repair) and 71 obsolete I-16 and I-153, 12 of which were in repair. It was on a modern fighter type MiG-3 reached the regiment commander major Vladimir Nikolayevich Orlov On the first day of the Great Patriotic War, the first official shot down a regiment when a Romanian bomber shot down north of Chisinau Airport, which he identified as Bristol Blenheim. It was one of the 18 Blenheim Mk.I owned by the Romanian Royal Air Force. Twelve pieces were purchased in England and six were supplied by a German ally who acquired them in occupied Yugoslavia. On the first day of the war, the Romanian army lost a total of nine bombers of various types.

On August 1, 1941, the regiment at the Ukrainian airport Volodarskoje was reformed according to the table number 015/134 and two months withdrawn from the queue for reforming and retraining for new technology. These were British fighters of the type Hawker Hurricane, delivered to the USSR under the so-called loan and lease agreement ( Lend-Lease ).The retraining lasted two months (25.10.-01.12.1941) and took place in 22. reserve air regiment of the Moscow Military District, stationed in the city of Kineshma Ivanovo region.

At the beginning of December 1941, the regiment joined the fighting in the 147th Fighter Air Defense Division. In July 1942, he moved from air defense troops to the Army Air Force and subordinated to 287. Fighter Air Division 1st Fighter Air Army fought on the Bryansk Front. After a few weeks of replenishment with fresh strength and retraining on Jakovlevy Jak-7B in 3. Reserve Air Brigade in August 1942, the regiment was incorporated into the 287th Fighter Air Division 8. Air Force Stalingrad Front. In December 1942, there was a retraining in a new technique - Jakovlevy Jak-1. The pilots of the regiment fought with these deft fighters at the turn of 1942/1943 and throughout the spring of 1943 on the Stalingrad, Southern Front and North Caucasus Front. In the summer of 1943, after retraining for excellent fighters Jak-9 fought the regiment on the Western Front and Bryansk Front, which was renamed in October 1943 2. Baltic Front.

On August 2, 1944, the regiment was awarded the Order of the Red Flag for courage in combat and exemplary fulfillment of orders.

After the war, the regiment gradually switched to new aircraft, when from Jak-3, the pilots at the end of 1948 retrained on fighters Lavochkin La -11. The pilots of the regiment switched to reactive technology in the summer of 1953, when they mastered the piloting of the MiG-15.

On October 14, 1959, the regiment was abolished after 21 years of existence.

By Order No. 07 of October 23, 1944, the commander of the 185th Fighter Air Division lieutenant colonel Zajcev ordered the regiments subordinate to the division a specific color design of the fuselage numbers and accessories. This measure was to serve to more quickly identify which regiment. With this order, he basically only formalized the previous practice of marking aircraft within the division.

The propeller cone was to be made red, with a 5 cm wide strip 10 cm from the tip, the strip will also be on the upper part of the vertical tail area. The fuselage numbers, the strip on the propeller cone and the tail area should be of the following color:
4th Fighter Air Regiment - blue color
148th Fighter Air Regiment - yellow color
293rd Fighter Air Regiment - white color

Attached is a drawing of Jakovlevu Jak-9T belonging to 4. IAP, which flew in the fall of 1943 later double Hero of the Soviet Union captain IN Stepanenko.

Interestingly, according to one Russian source, it was the pilots 4. IAP who were to subdue the fourth best German fighter (by number of shots) Oberleutenanta Otto Kittel (267 victories) . At that time, this commanded the 2nd Squadron Jagdgeschwader 54.

Description of the situation from the Russian point of view:
February 16, 1945 Eight Jak-9, led by the squadron commander 4. IAP major Stepanenko, flew to "clean the air" before the arrival of battleships Ilyushin Il-2 z 225. Battle Air Division. The "flying tanks" were to attack a group of German and Lithuanian troops in the area of Tukums - Libava. However, since the year was no longer 1941 but 1945, experienced Soviet pilots created two groups in the target area - the lower strike group and the cover group, located in the elevation. The strike group, led by the double Hero of the Soviet Union Major Ryazan got into a fight with a square over the target FW-190. At the same time, Major Stepanenko's group was attacked by two groups of German fighters, which flew from the direction of the Baltic Sea. However, only one enemy fighter, which apparently was Oberleutenant Otto Kittel, managed to reach the "stormtroopers". Due to the concentrated fire of the deck gunners of the fighters flying over the target in the defensive circle, the angle of his Focke-Wulf was to the side, and then Major Ryazan was to hit him with a dose of his deck weapons. As a result, the German machine had to roll over the right wing and hit the ground. When Major Stepanenko was shot down shortly afterwards by the second "fokker", as the German pilots called the Soviet pilots in jargon, the rest of the group withdrew from the battlefield.

For Major Stepanenko it was the 30th individual shot down, for Major Ryazanov 29th.

Since, according to German data, two members of Jagdgeschwader 54 - Oberleutenant Otto Kittel and the latter, Major Ryazanov, arrived.

After critical analysis of available zdrojov sebakriticky I admit that I was wrong Embarassed. Uncritically som has taken over the info zo sourceand, ktorý sa javil albeit ako celok dôveryhodným, well at least in detailoch about zostrele Oberleutenanta Otto Kittela stavia on výmysloch. I mean this link www.libma.ru who contains článok from the magazine Aviacija i Kosmonavtika no 1/1999.

.N. Stepanenko dosiahol his last zostrel 06.01.1945 east from Dzukste, so the sa referred to boja sure zúčastniť I couldn't. Takýto fight nespomína or vo summon autobiografickej knihe Plamennoje or that came out in 1983 (Степаненко И.Н. Пламенное небо — К.: Политиздат Украины, 1983).

And. To. Ryazanov again, under the proposal to udelenie vyznamenania, odlietal from 28.01.1945 to 14.05.1945 2 (slovom two) combat flights, pri ktorých however nezostrelil uh nepriateľské airplane. Ak that bolo, bolo it would be 100% in the proposal above. Besides in januári bol ťažko been hurt and liečil sa in the hospital.

So the myth of the zostrelení Oberleutenanta Otto Kittela sovietskymi expert, two exams probably padol. Pravdepodobnejšou verziou will be his zostrelenie palubným strelcom Iljušinu Il-2 - rjadovym Grigorijom Dmitrievičom Perepelicom (viac info here).
