The Great Britain snake acquired a license to build the HS.404, which was first used in a British fighter as the Hispano Mk.Even with the Westland Whirlwind of 1940. British engineers would be Martin-Baker developed a belt-feeding mechanism. The new design was adopted by the RAF and FAA in 1941 in a slightly modified form as the Hispano Mk.II.
Four cannons replaced the eight .303 Browning machine guns in the Hurricane Mk.IIc.

British Hispano Mk.II

This weapon was developed in the UK based on the licensed production of the Hispano-Suiza HS-404 gun. The cannon was first produced in the UK in the Hispano Mk.I version, whose ammunition supply was carried in a drum magazine and was fitted to, for example, Westland Whirlwind Mk.I heavy fighters, Beaufighters and experimentally to Spitfires Mk.Ib.

The disadvantage of this weapon was the limited ammunition supply and also the size of the drum magazine, which already made it difficult to fit the weapon into the wing of the aircraft. For this purpose the gun was rotated 90° and the magazine actually lay next to the gun, but this caused reliability problems.

The first Spitfires were soon withdrawn from the battlefield, the solution was the use of a cartridge belt, which had been attempted by the French, but they were unable to implement this modification. However, the drawings were handed over to the British in 1940, and the designers at Martin-Baker managed to successfully solve this method of loading and brought this modification to a workable state and put the gun into production, which was designated the Hispano Mk.II.

The height of the gun was reduced, making it easier to fit into the wing, the ammunition supply was greatly increased and the reliability of the gun was also greatly improved, but it was still not quite the same. The barrel had a short breech and the gun often jammed. Firing a single cannon (on the Spitfire) caused considerable buckling of the aircraft. Gunsmiths found that each gun behaved quite differently and they had to treat each gun differently when adjusting it, then the situation improved. The effectiveness of this gun was good, compared to the German MG-FF, or the Russian ŠVAK cannon, it was twice as good. Another development is the Hispano Mk.V.
