In its time, one of the most modern tank constructions. After the occupation, Wermacht took over LT vz. 38 into its armament under the designation Pz.Kpfw. 38 (t). Between 1939 and 1942, more than 1,400 machines were created for the needs of the Axis. When it became obsolete as a light tank, it was largely used as a reconnaissance vehicle. The tank chassis became the basis for many other derived vehicles, such as tank destroyers Marder, several self-propelled anti-aircraft guns and tractors. It was also based on a tank destroyer Jagdpanzer 38 (t) Hetzer, whose derived version G-13 served in the Swiss army in the late sixties.

The tank was rated as reliable, with easy maintenance, good cannon and armor (until 1941). Later, as a battle tank, insufficient. Generally rated as the best light tank of World War II. A number of superstructures are mounted on the chassis. The concept of the chassis after the war was still used in Sweden in the construction of the local armored personnel carrier Pbv 301.

Diskuse

I would like to add a few comments on the museum exhibits shown:

1/
The current exhibit, VTM-Lešany, was registered in 1983 under number XX/1. It also had a differential with serial number 13103. The car included a 3.7 cm KUV vz. 38 with Wehrmacht registration number: 69327 Rl 5780 Rh10A from 1940. Allegedly, the serial number of the car was stamped on the beam of the right front fender.

2/
It can be assumed that this is one of 37 machines originally delivered to the army of the first Slovak Republic, where it served under the designation: light tank 38 (LT-38). The external and internal equipment of the tanks corresponded to the standard of light tanks Pz. Kpfw. 38 (t) Ausf. A-D, except for the radio equipment of the vz. 35. The BMM (ex-CKD) factory produced them in two series, under the factory designation: TNH-Sl (Slovak) and TNH-Sl/II (2nd series). Note that this tank is not a Pz. Kpfw. 38 (t) Ausf. S !

3/
The exhibit located in VTM-Lešany is not complete. Lack of spare parts was solved by cannibalization of other equipment. For example, this machine uses wheels from Hetzer, it is the 1st and 3rd wheel of the left and right travel. Therefore, during the ride it gives the impression of being heavy on the "butt".

4/
The current camouflage does not conform to the First Republic camouflage scheme. When this exhibit was reconstructed years ago, the then commander of VM-Kbely, Mr. Jaroslav Janečka, explained my information about the colour shades in his own way. The distribution of spots corresponds to the supplied photo documentation from PA VHJ ČKD and JOK diffrology.

5/
Exhibit located in the Museum of Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica, probably also belongs to the TNH-Sl series. In 1974, it still had the markings on the left hull armour: ÚV 833 and the number 75944.

6/
After the reconstruction these markings disappeared. Nowadays, this exhibit has only a three-colour coat of arms of the army of the First Slovak Republic.

Note on tank models ...
Attention, on "model exchanges" there are sometimes very old models of Pz. Kpfw. 38 (t) in M1:35:

a/
A product of the Italian company Italaerei, later Italera, from about the 1960s, wrong dimensions, the moulding uses parts from the Hetzer kit.

b/
A product of the German company Revell, collaboration with Italery, probably from the 1960s, wrong dimensions, the moulding uses parts from the Hetzer kit.

c/
A product of the Japanese company Tamiya with similar errors, probably from the 1970s, allegedly a borrowed Italera mould ...

Notes on tank exports:
If you include the Czechoslovak Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and the Wehrmacht's assistance to the Allies, then between 1920 and 1945, the following types of machines were exported:

Afghanistan: misinformation - no export !
Bulgaria: Š-II-aB, export equivalent of LT vz.35.
Bulgaria: Pz.Kpfw. 35 (t), local designation "lek tank Skoda", a Wehrmacht aid to the Allies.
Bulgaria: Pz.Kpfw. 38 (t), Wehrmacht assistance to the Allies.
Latvia: twice wrong information, should be Lithuania - no export !
Hungary: Pz.Kpfw. 38 (t), local designation T-38, assistance to the Wehrmacht by the Allies.
Yugoslavia: Š-Id, local designation T-32, test series only, not part of the LT series vz. 35 and 38 !
Persia (Iran): AH-IV or AH-IV-P, local designation RH, not part of the LT vz. 35 and 38 series !
Persia (Iran): TNH or TNH-P, local designation TNH, predecessor of the LT series of 38.
Peru: LTP, local designation Tanque 38/39, not part of the LT series 35 and 38 !
German Third Reich: TNH-P-s, series 1 to 9, Wehrmacht designation: leichte Panzerkampfwagen LT M.38, later Pz. Kpfw. 38 (t) Ausführung A-G, version Ausf. H and M were not tanks in the proper sense of the word.
German Third Reich: TNH-Sv, exported to Sweden seized by the Wehrmacht and used under the designation: Pz. Kpfw. 38 (t) Ausf. S. Attention, these tanks do not belong to the TNH-Sl export series for Slovakia !
Romania: AH-IV-R, locally designated R-1, not part of the LT series vz. 35 and 38 !
Romania: Pz.Kpfw. 38 (t), local designation T-38, Wehrmacht assistance to the Allies.
Romania: Š-II-aR, local designation R-2 and R-2c, export equivalent of LT vz.35.
Slovakia: TNH-Sl and TNH-Sl/II, local designation LT-38.
Slovakia: LTS, local designation LT-40, not part of the LT vz. 35 and 38 series !
Slovakia: Pz.Kpfw. 38 (t), Wehrmacht assistance to the Allies.
Soviet Union, via Turkey: KH-60, samples, local designation unknown, does not belong to the ranks of LT vz. 35 and 38 !
Sweden: AH-IV-S or AH-IV-Sv, delivered in disassembled condition and assembled on site, local designation Strv. m/37, does not belong to the LT vz. 35 and 38 series !
Sweden: TNH-Sv, only a sample piece and licensing rights granted, Swedish companies produced tanks under the designation Strv. m/41 S-I and S-II.
Switzerland: LTH, local designation Pzw. 39, not part of the LT vz. 35 and 38 series !

Dear colleagues,
Today I received a reply from the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica, which supplements points 5 and 6 of my previous contribution:

"... at your request dated 7 July 2005, we would like to inform you of the following:
1/Tank has registration number: 846, increment number: 72/64.
2/We have been recording it since 1964.
3/At the time of admission he had no other inscriptions.
4/It is possible to get acquainted with its documentation.
5/The tank has the number ÚV 833 75944.

Sincerely, PhDr. Daniela Baranová, head of the historical department "

I found in my archive images of LT-38 from Banská Bystrica, the designation of the final double number 44, which was given by Mr. Tintěra, is also visible. As you can see, today this tank is in a different place than it was in the seventies. It's a pity that my ancestor didn't photograph the whole tank from BB either Very Happy. So a rear view must be enough for you Smile. Note, in contrast to the current situation, that the tank in the 70s had a flag of Czechoslovakia on the tower and now has a shield with a tricolor. The photo was taken on 15 August 1974 during a trip of the SZM to the SNP museum.

Dear colleagues,
A new one appeared in the flood of Russian websites, , which deals only with tanks of the TNH-P-s type series. The author and operator is Alexej M. Kalinin, who once participated in the reconstruction of the tank Pz . Kpfw. 38 (t) Ausf. F in Kubinka near Moscow.

The pages written in Russian contain a lot of interesting data from the history of Pz tanks. Kpfw. 38, including information on the service of these tanks in units of the Soviet Army.

For those interested in the history of tanks from ČKD (BMM), I highly recommend studying this website.
