When designing the P-26 the company was Boeing limited by the requirements of the army air forces, requested by some authenticated, but not very progressive elements, as was the fixed landing gear and wings reinforced with wires. Boeing then proposed another project, Model 264, which has no limit left. It was basically a modernized P-26 with a fully samonosným wing, now located to the bottom of the fuselage, and landing gear zatahovaným backward into the wings after the pattern of the Model 200 Monomail, with wheels from the mid protruding under the wing. The fuselage and tail surfaces were basically the same, and the engine was once again Wasp. Development and construction was conducted on the corporate costs, while the army agreed to the construction of three machines on the basis of the usual agreement on the lease.

The first Model 264, which left the factory, had on the difference from the P-26 also narrow odsouvatelný canopy, passing in back of the fuselage. The used engine was the Wasp R-1340-31, instead of a ring Townend was, however, used the full fairing NACA. First flew 20. letdna 1934, and five days later he was flown to the military test airport Wright Field, where to get a test designation of XP-940. The army but the narrow cockpit did not suit - too much according to her, limited the pilot's field of view, and in march was the XP-940 returned to the factory for rebuilding. The new cab was open, the spine remained, he was just behind the cockpit slightly raised. Replaced was also the engine for a more powerful variant of the -35, and instead of fairing NACA was again used proven a ring Townend, the same, as in the meantime get the serial the P-26A. The army was returned in may 1934 and in a new form for the first time took off 4. June. The army, meanwhile, decided XP-940 and his "brothers" to buy and 29. June the contract was signed. XP-940 got assigned the designation YP-29A and serial 34-24 - the second, only the unfinished machine was purchased somewhat earlier and received therefore the designation of YP-29. Sometimes it is for the first machine in its original form claimed also the designation XP-29, it can but be considered unofficial. YP-29A later got the engine Pratt & Whitney R-1340-27, which used serial P-26A, and its designation has been simplified to a simple P-29A. Even in the one form of military pilots didn't really care, and was recommended for serial production.

The already mentioned second machine was completed with a new much more spacious cabin, even he but off your game. The third machine, designated the YP-29B, army air force took over the 11. October 1934. He also had an open cockpit, got but a one-piece split-flaps, the outer panels of the wing should be about one degree more dihedral and from YP-29 took also modified the tail wheel. He was sent to Chanute Field operational tests, and he also was later renamed the deletion of the "Y" of the test but showed still only slightly better features than he had in the meantime in the service of the established the P-26A, and was not ordered. On the drawing table, the project Model 278A or XP-32, which should be distinguished using a 522kW engine R-1535 Twin Wasp and bogie zatahovaným to the fuselage, the military showed no interest, and the development was terminated. Boeing soon after ceased to engage in the development of jet fighters, with the exception of XF8B-1, but took off about ten years later..
