XP-9 was Boeingův first attempt at a fighter monoplane. The Model 96 was created according to the specification X-1623A, which were issued 24. may, 1928 and the contract on the one machine with the army designation XP-9 was signed five days later. Originally, this was the very first monoplane of the company Boeing, but the various delays have caused, that place in April 1929 was the army passed until in September, 1930, so the first zalétaným jednoplošným Beingem became a traffic Model 200 Monomail.

Design of the XP-9 was for the company also completely new. The hull was poloskořepinový, with metal frames coated duralumin, from chassis foot forward had a classic skeleton of steel tubes. The tail surfaces were essentially taken from P-12, wing, with metal frames and fabric covering also the shape match, but it was larger and set directly on the fuselage in front of cockpit. For the engine was selected the Curtiss Conqueror with a compressor, with a cooler of Preston under the engine.

After the completion of was the XP-9 transported by train to the army test centre at Wright Field, where he also made his first takeoff. Flight tests have shown a lot of bad qualities, starting with the view from the cockpit of the limited wing, instability and lousy maneuverability. Got a new rudder with a larger triangular kýlovkou, but this too didn't help and the army decided to don't order the series and canceled and the construction of five Y1P-9, which was envisaged in the framework of the orders to P-12D. In August 1931 the army after only 15 flying hours later, the XP-9's out like a flightless instructional tool..
