Boeing XF8B

History

On November 17, 1944, the prototype Boeing XF8B-1 airborne fighter aircraft took to the air for the first time. The emergence and development of the aircraft brought several interesting facts worth recalling.

Starting with the famous Boeing P-26 Peashooter, the aircraft that ushered in the era of monoplanes in the early 1930s, the Boeing Model 400 was again a fighter after a series of successful bomber aircraft. Its creation was driven by the Naval Air Forces SD-349 technical specifications. With the release of these specifications in 1943, the U.S. Navy made its official request for a very long-range fighter aircraft, the size of the new fighter was similar to that of torpedo planes of the time.

The new fighter's high performance was to be provided by a massive twenty-eight-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-4360 engine with 3,000 horsepower. The engine's power was to be transmitted by counter-rotating three-bladed propellers made by Curtiss or Aeroproducts. On 10 April 1943, the Navy handed Boeing an order to build three prototypes, already designated XF8B-1.

However, the Boeing factory did not have the necessary capacity to produce the fighter, all of its production plants were supplying bombers to the US Air Force, so small shops had to be involved in production, and this contributed to delays in development.

After conducting ground tests, the prototype flew easily and test pilot Robert Lamson noted that the aircraft had pleasing flight characteristics, the engine was well tuned and caused no problems, but the large forces required to control the ailerons, folding the wings back behind the aircraft, and the oil cooler still had to be relocated caused problems.

The airplane was modified, the wings were raised up and Boeing installed a seat behind the pilot's seat for an engineer to monitor the airplane's systems during flight tests. The technician had been flying since January 1945. Testing was conducted primarily at Patuxent River Airport in Maryland, and practice dogfights with the P-59 Airacomet and the F7F Tigercat were also conducted there, with the second and third prototypes also involved in the tests.

From February 1946, the aircraft was also tested by USAAF pilots at its Wright Field base; the Army Air Force was looking for a fighter bomber at the time, and up to 1,450 kg of bombs could be hung under the Boeing aircraft. However, by the late 1940s, jet-powered aircraft were no longer in demand, and the piston-engined aircraft was scrapped in early 1948, with the first and second prototypes being scrapped in early 1948, followed by the third prototype in 1950.
