Jeden ze čtyř vyrobených byl používán jako demonstrátor, tzn. předváděcí letoun a právě tento byl později prodán do Japonska, kde jej zkoušelo námořní letectvo jako AXB1 Model 100 - Civil version of the F4B-1. Last of the Model 100s, NX874H, was also used as a company demonstrator and was eventually sold to the Mitsui Company of Japan (Navy Experimental Type B Carrier Fighter - AXB1).

The Boeing Model 100 was a civilian variant of the F4B-1 fighter. The main difference was, of course, the removal of the military equipment and the installation of the fuel tank in the centre of the upper wing.

Four machines were built, the first of which (c/n 1142) flew on 1 April 1929 and was delivered to the Bureau of Transportation Aviation on 7 June 1929 with government registration NS21. The second, NX872H, was sold to Pratt & Whitney and used for engine tests. In addition to variants of the original R-1340 Wasp, it also flew the R-985 Wasp Jr, R-1535 Twin Wasp and R-1690 Hornet.

It was later sold to stuntman Milo Burcham, who used it with the new registration NC872H between 1933-1941. By then it had been heavily modified, the canvas on the fuselage blocks replaced with sheet metal, the undercarriage was catapulted and it received low pressure tyres. The original grey-green Boeing livery was replaced by a new red-blue-silver livery. Later, the damaged one came into the possession of Paul Mantz, who used it in films such as Task Force, modified to resemble a two-seater Curtiss F8C-2 Helldiver. It was sold at auction and rebuilt again in 1968, then owned by Boeing test pilot Lew Mallick, given a Wasp Jr. engine, and flew in the colors of the P-12 95th Fighter Squadron. It was donated to the Museum of Flight in Seattle in 1986.

A third machine, c/n 1144, had a similar career and flew perhaps every variant registration (873H, C873H, NR873H...). It first served in factory colors as a test machine and demonstrator, then at Boeing's Oakland Aeronautical School as a trainer. It was purchased by Mantz in 1936 and flew for show until the 1970s. After the war, like the previous machine, it received a Wasp Jr. engine and the F4B-1 VF-5B Red Rippers livery. It was sold to the Weeks Aviation Museum in Miami in 1985. In 1992, the hangar roof fell on it during Hurricane Andrew, but it would later become airworthy again.

A fourth machine, registered NX874H, was also used as a factory demonstrator, and in 1931 was temporarily given the Model 100D designation when it was shown in an attempt to win an order for an export version P-12D. Because of this, it received a Townend-type engine cowling, landing gear and equipment as the P-12D, but the wings remained original. It was later sold to Mitsui in Japan, where it disappeared.
