Char d Assault (French tank) Schneider was originally developed as an armored crawler tractor, designed to tow the sled armored units through the German trenches on the western front. His design was based of the american farm tractor Holt. The first Schneider has traveled in mid-1917. Their tanks with gasoline were very vulnerable, after the intervention of the tanks very frequently caught fire. They were used rather as a means of support infantry such as armored personnel carriers. Their weakness was the weak crossing capacity, the relatively short belts and a large length of the hull. Vehicles armed with a machine gun stopped manufacture in may 1917. On production lines to replace it with the Char de Revitaillement (supply tank), designed to transport military material. Significant losses and low reliability caused that the end of the war in active service were less than 100 machines of this type.

Char ďassault modèle 1916

Probable French army designation: char d'assault modèle 1916 (char d'assault car model 1916)
Probable company designation: Schneider CA-1 (char d'assault car type 1)

Dear colleagues,
I was intrigued by your story about Spain (see below) and so I took the liberty to do some research and found a nice story by Mr Ivo Pejcoch about this machine, the bulk of which I will present here.

"... The only country besides France to actually include the Schneider in its armament was Spain, which after the end of the First World War acquired six of these vehicles, from which a unit of the Bateria de Carros de Asalto, based in Madrid, was built. The battery consisted of six tanks, six Latil tractors and six trucks, with an ammunition supply of 6,000 shells of 75 millimetre calibre.

In 1921, an uprising against European rule broke out in Spanish and French controlled Morocco. It was led by Abd-al-Karim, whose troops managed to push the 20,000-strong Spanish army back to its main base, the port of Melilla. Reinforcements, including the aforementioned battery of Schneiders, commanded by Captain Carlos Ruíz de Toledo, streamed across the sea to the fortified city. Tanks supported the city's defences, and in the later stages of the fighting took part in the Spanish counter-offensive, in conjunction with infantry attacks on Sbuch Sba and other points, The so-called Republic of Rif, created on the territory occupied by Abd-al-Karim's forces, was finally destroyed by the Franco-Spanish Corps in 1926. During the battles in which the Schneiders were active, they demonstrated more than once their effectiveness against an enemy who, however, possessed only a minimum of weapons usable in anti-tank warfare. The Schneiders were returned to Madrid and eventually four were preserved and stored in the local military arsenal.

It would seem that obsolete military material would end up in a museum at most, but when the Spanish Civil War broke out, the CA-1s were removed from storage and activated as part of the means of defence of the metropolis. Two machines were sent to Toledo to reinforce its defences, one fell into Nationalist hands, the other later returned to Madrid. Here the three Republican vehicles took an active part in the defence of the metropolis, and after the surrender they were taken over by the existing Nationalist army, but the old, slow and worn-out tanks were no longer of any use to it. They were soon scrapped and one has been preserved as a museum exhibit to this day. The Schneider CA-1 had all the drawbacks of the first generation tanks, being slow, poorly armoured, with poor ground clearance and without a turret, but it was irreplaceable for the offensives of the French forces during the Great War and fulfilled its historical task. The type has been preserved as a museum exhibit in both France and Spain."

Wooden exhibit was in collections even after the year 2000. As far as I know exposed it is probably to this day. When the middle view is to see the structure of the material (something like construction plywood and of course when you on the machine you touch you cannot feel the coldness of the metal). But it's solidly made, and without closer inspection, it is not know. personally, I like that first "revealed" in 1998 and then the machine was gray with a white heart. Carrousel is a traditional affair and does not serve as a matter of priority to advertising techniques, showing him the art of pupils and teachers of the school, originally it was (and still is) a school of cavalry for the higher officers, the program also was half devoted to the exercises of cavalry and half of various "famous" episodes of the French military actions. Some operate quite cheerful impression, when two French R.35 wards off the germans in 1940 Smile But the program is definitely worth watching and, despite the fact that it is quite long (about 3 - 4 hours), and honestly the riding part is nicer Smile I'm Not sure if that mockup is still exposed, the last time I was there so I didn't take photos, but also originally stood somewhat sideways, so I just had to take pictures because for me, as the reality had meaning.

Tento tank bol aj vo výzbroji Španielska. 6ks dorazilo do krajiny v septembri 1921.

Všechny španělské Shneidery byly z Afriky staženy v roce 1929 a uloženy v Parque de Artillería v Madridu.

Thank you very much for your completely exhaustive answer. It is obvious that you have mapped the tanks from WWI and their later fates quite well...I personally like tanks from WWI very much.A lot of people find them ridiculous today, but in their time they were very advanced and most importantly, terrifying weapons. With the US bringing back the tank, it kind of reminds me of the situation here. When our LT-35 light tank came back to us, I think it was two years ago, also from the US Very Happy

I see you are a frequent visitor to the museum in Saumur... Smile To see this monster, even if it is only a mock-up, must be a real experience! And only when driving it must be great!I would quite like to experience it too.Otherwise, looking at your last photo, where the tank can be seen from the side, I see that the machine gun could be placed almost parallel to the hull.It could also be placed quite far back. The ceiling looks far enough away. This solution of placing the machine gun seems to me quite practical and also convenient...

Dear colleague,
I have taken the liberty of merging the text from two columns into one.
